Civil BIM - Pavement

Civil BIM - Pavement

Infraworks needs to implement Civil BIM. After years of marketing it's time Autodesk actually implements Civil BIM so we can leverage an actual model based design. I want to be ablility to tell my kids that I'm designing pavement instead of getting blank stares when I tell them I designing feature lines.

Pavement needs the ability to talk to adjacent civil BIM objects such as curb and gutter, sidewalk, driveways, and other common objects you will find in the word. The pavement object should trim it's self to the other objects. So if you add curb and gutter along one edge it will join it. The pavement object found in parking lots should accept curb and gutter islands with landscaping. The grades of this island should generally follow the pavement grades with the ability to modify the curb and gutter elevations to allow for grade changes to allow for water flow.

+1 Catch and spill curb options too please.

@C3D_TomR - Spill curb is defined as having the gutter flow away from the face of curb.  (also known as Hung)SpillCurb.png

So if the pavement object attaches to the curb object, will it assume to catch or spill based on the adjacent grade? I'm visualizing something like how you can currently split a road and apply a style so that the split section of road becomes a bridge.

That would be the way I would see it. I'd expect you'd be able to go in and change where it goes from hung to normal gutter slope. Sometimes you might have an area where it could go either way for a small strech and you would't want it swapping back and forth due to constructability reasons. Also here in California we'll just put in a curb at that point, so I'd want it to have an option to switch to that configuration as well.

In addition the curb and gutter will need to join at at non-rounded locations. The curb will need to model that and allow us to set grades. Not quite sure how everyone would want that to occur and probably don't care now, but would when they see the model.

Have an ESAL Input and really have the pavement designed i.e. StructurL number calc. =>layers and thickness ...

Without thAt we can only tell our kids we are drWing pavement

I have to agree with Civil3DReminders that pavement or other features should be able to freely interact with other object.  When placing a corridor down a design surface I want my site grading to connect to the my sidewalk, curb and gutter corridor component's .  It would help to determine if the site is properly draining and if your were meeting with the design criteria

"Parametric" pavement objects that are "connected/maintain associativity" with other site/road assets is what the teams are working towards. While this original post has many behavioural aspects, they will be vetted and raised for the feedback as we proceed.

Will that be issued as an update or with the next version of Civil 3D gchakri?

A general disclaimer that the status "accepted" is meant to say that this idea is being worked on and doesn’t indicate any specific release or indication of roadmapJ.

Now specific to this particular request, I can say that the teams are working on this idea and developing strategies around it. What I can’t say (yet) is time frame for a release. This, like some other ideas, need significant efforts as we are attempting to transform the existing workflows. As it unfolds we would reach out to our users to get the feedback.

The discussion in this idea station is in general pertains to InfraWorks 360, but we noted your interest in having these for Civil 3D too.

In order to get more clarity around this as we are considering, we would want to clarify a few and one of our colleagues will moderate the discussion.

I would be willing to participate in that discussion.

Similar comment to that posted for the curb and gutter idea:  With the inclusion of a lane and sloped asphalt component that is part of the component roads functionality, I'd say we're on our way to implementing a pavement object. If/when component roads become part of the supported product (no longer Preview) I'd like to propose that we change the status to Implemented and ask that @Civil3DReminders or others from the community submit the individual functionality requests listed here as individual ideas.
