Often times this is done in conjunction with an architectural site plan. This needs the ability to provide slopes down to a building, if it's in a pit. The pit needs the ability to capture water. On the sides it needs the ability to have retaining walls and safety railings. All of the features need to parameterically interact with the surrounding objects such as the building and the pavement adjacent to the loading dock and place the retaining walls and safety fence at the correct height for the design. Changes to the loading dock and pavement should propogate to each other. Here are some design standards from one company.
