Better positioning when importing a model with coordinates

Better positioning when importing a model with coordinates

We have been trying to import Revit models with coordinates and orientation attached to them. When importing the model into the area created with Infraworks Model Builder, the Revit building is always several meters away from where it should be (across the street for example). The orientation of the building is always correct but the position is not.

We tried both of the two existing geodetic systems of coordinates, WGS84 and NAD83, but none of them gave a good result.

It would be great if this point was improved in Infraworks 360 or if we were told how to match the coordinates properly

We are constantly plagued by this problem and yes, we need a tool to address the complexities of translating from a local coordinate system (Revit, 3ds max, FormIt, Sketchup, etc.) to a geospatial system. I have come up a method which has worked very well for us and thus created a class for AU a few years ago. You can find it in the AU catalog under "AV11500 - Effective Coordinate Space Transformation Workflows".

All in all, it works very well, but requires at least a copy of Autocad MAP 3D, with which to create the custom coordinate systems readable by applications like Infraworks.

I suppose I should post an idea on this, huh? 😉

Thanks for reposting, Mark. I may combine these two ideas into one (link to other, for reference: http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/infraworks-360-ideas/support-for-exchanging-non-geospatial-datasets/id...

We'll start taking a look at how we might begin solving this. Thanks.
