Point Cloud to Terrain Error

Good day,

I'm encountering the same issue that was discussed in this topic, but there was never a solution provided

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/infraworks-forum/point-cloud-classification-error/m-p/8579170#M16899

I've created a point cloud in Pix4D by using a series of drone flights and survey ground control points. I've then imported this point cloud into ReCap for conversion to Autodesk friendly file type. I'm trying to clean up the point cloud in a similar fashion to the video below to weed out as many outliers as I can to eventually make a tin surface from the clean point file in Civil3D. If I just bring in the point file now straight into civil3d and create a surface, the resulting tin surface ends up being jagged and rough. Maybe I should be adjusting settings directly in civil3d?

Could anyone provide me with a work flow? Is my work flow correct? I also have access to Global Mapper if that would be faster.

Hi @PLM1987 ,

you describe to load the point cloud into Civil 3D.
What does it have to do with InfraWorks? Mybe I misunderstand or I'm missing something?

Regards,

Karsten.

The end goal is to bring it into Civil3D to generate a TIN surface. The current goal is to clean the point cloud and as per the video I linked in my original post using the point cloud to terrain function is a way of doing a first pass on it.

if i bring the point cloud in as is and generate a TIN surface it's pretty dirty looking. I'm trying to avoid going into recap and manually deleting all outlier points as it would take a long time.

EDIT: Sorry I just noticed I didn't link the youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WIEYBeovU8

Hi @PLM1987 ,

ah, now I see what you mean.

What version of InfraWorks do you work with?
If it's the latest version, please try the process again after starting InfraWorks as Administrator (right mouse click on InfraWorks start shortcut).
Let me know if that works.

Regards,

Karsten.

Thanks for the reply.

I am currently using Infraworks 2022 and I unfortunately do not have admin rights (on a company PC)

Hi @PLM1987 ,

the point cloud terrain generation features in InfraWorks 2022 currently don't work if you don't have Admin rights to start InfraWorks.
The issue is fixed by the development team and the fix will be included in the next update 2022.1.

See also: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/article/Point-Cloud-Terrain-creation-doesn-t-work-in-InfraWorks-2022

If you don't get Admin rights, the only alternative solution is to revert to InfraWorks 2021.2 until the update for 2022 is published.

Regards,
Karsten.
