Infraworks 360 Terrain Data Source

Hi,

 

Does anyone know what the source data is for Infraworks 360? I'm using NASA SRTM 90 for my surface in Civil 3D and running some preliminary designs based on that surface. However, when I bring in my corridor model into IW360, the elevations don't line up and are quite off. 

 

Should I import my surface too? It's quite a massive surface though, and I'm afraid I would lose all the other infrastructure and terrain data by bringing in the SRTM 90 surface.

 

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated!

Hello,

 

If you use the Model Builder to create a model, these are the data sources:

 

  • Terrain: Terrain data for the United States and its territories uses USGS 10 and 30 meter DEMs from the National Elevation Dataset (NED). Between -60° and +60° latitude we use SRTMGL1 30m DEM data. Between +60° and +83° latitude we use ASTER GDEM v2 30m DEM data.
  • Roads: OpenStreetMap's Highway and Railway datasets are readily available. They will be used to create roads and railway features in the model.
  • Buildings: Building data is from the OpenStreetMap dataset.
  • Imagery: Satellite imagery from Microsoft® Bing Maps is draped over the model terrain.

So if I was using 1 Arc Second data in Civil 3D instead of the SRTM 90 data, it would theoretically line up perfectly when I bring it into Infraworks 360 (for areas within +/- 60° latitudes) correct?

At the equator, 1 Arc Second is over 30 m (30.87m). Alignment can be perfect. The resolution in the CONUS is down to 10 m, I believe (i.e. better resolution than 1 Arc Second).

Thank you @elliott.rosenfeld for the detailed explination of data source within the US.

I have not used the program but currently looking into using InfraWorks in my workflow.

 

What about the data source for Europe/Asia?

I believe for most regions in Europe you get SRTM data out of the model builder.

 

Depending on what region you are looking for, it'S definitely worth to search the internet for official free datasets. For example, Austria offers a free 10m resoltution LIDAR terrain dataset for the whole country.

I know of other countries and regional authorities that offer similar datasets, i.e. Alto Adige in Northern Italy.

the German authorities want you to pay for LIDAR terrain data, I am not aware of any free data other than the SRTM's.

Sometimes, if you have luck, you can find local authorities WMS server with (mostly) aerial imagery, but sometimes also terrain is included. But even then, bringing in WMS data into InfraWorks is not ideal.
