Is it possible to apply a style such as grass, pavement, concrete, to a terrain imported using either .imx or .xml?

Certainly! What I like to do is export the boundary of the surface from Civil3D as a .shp file, and then import that into Infraworks as a coverage area. The coverage area will drape over the terrain and you can assign whatever landscape/ground cover style you like to it.

You could also "trace" your terrain in Infraworks with a coverage area too if you didn't need it to be an exact match.

Exporting geometry from C3D it is always easier and faster than sketching an area in IW, you can also MAPEXPORT close polylines as SDF or SHP as @JasonArtley mentioned just remember to check this option before exporting... and that the drawing must have coordinate systems assigned...

Hope this will help!

Thank you Jason.  I was able to make it go through the steps and achieve the desired result.  It's a bit of a work around but does work.  Thanks again.

Excellent points TMACHADO.  Although highly necessary, coordinate systems are easy to overlook.  I appreciate your response.
