Enable Curtain Wall Families in Autodesk Informed Design to Be Categorized as Facades and Used in Curtain Grids

Hello Autodesk Team and Community,
I would like to share an idea that could significantly improve workflows when working with facades in Autodesk Informed Design. Currently, there is a limitation that affects the integration of curtain wall families into curtain grids within design configurations. This enhancement would help ensure consistency between Revit and Informed Design and make facade design much more efficient.

Below are the details of the idea, including the description, proposed solution, and benefits for users:

Description:

In Revit, it is currently possible to insert curtain wall families into curtain grids. Unfortunately, these families are not categorized as “Facade” in Autodesk Informed Design. As a result, they cannot be used within curtain grids in design configurations.

This functionality is essential for editing and configuring facades. Allowing curtain wall families to be correctly recognized as facades and inserted into curtain grids would significantly improve workflows and ensure consistency between Revit and Informed Design.

Proposed Solution:
  • Extend Informed Design so that curtain wall families are recognized as a facade category.
  • Enable these families to be inserted and edited within curtain grids in design configurations.
  • Ensure full support for parametric and configuration options for curtain wall families.

Benefits for Users:
  • Unified workflow between Revit and Informed Design.
  • Improved editing and configuration of facades.
  • Time savings and higher accuracy in planning complex facades.

Hi Alexander — thanks for raising this. We want to understand your curtain wall workflow better so we can support it correctly.

A bit of context first: Informed Design can’t generate true Revit façade or curtain wall system families. These categories rely on Revit-internal behaviors that aren’t reproducible in loadable families, which is why we don’t currently support them. That said, we’re unsure whether the category itself is the blocker in your workflow, so we’d like to clarify a few points.

A few questions for you:

  1. What exactly are you trying to place into the curtain grid — ID-generated components, panels, or something else?

  2. Is Revit explicitly preventing placement because the family isn’t tagged as “Facade” or “Curtain Wall”?

  3. Are you expecting façade-like system behavior (e.g., adaptive panel behavior, auto-alignment), or simply the ability to insert the family into the grid?

Why we’re asking:
From our experience, many non-facade Revit families can be inserted into curtain grids, so we want to confirm whether this is a hard category restriction or something else in the workflow.

Possible direction:
If your goal is automated population of a curtain grid, that’s likely better addressed through a Dynamo or future AI-assisted workflow, where ID reads the grid geometry and places configured components for you.

We’d love to understand your intended workflow and the exact blocker you’re hitting so we can determine the right solution.
