HSM 2018 - Editor and Backplot

Hi all -

We've been watching the feedback regarding the elimination of the backplotting capabilities in the version of the CIMCO Editor that ships with Inventor HSM and HSMWorks. It's clear that this is a capability that many of you are genuinely missing. We'd like to give you a little background on what happened here, and what we're planning to do about it.

For the past few years, we have had a technology sharing agreement in place where we could redistribute the Professional version of the editor, in exchange for access to the HSM CAM kernel. This agreement expired at the end of last year, so we had to renegotiate the arrangement.

The arrangement we reached, at considerable increased cost to Autodesk, was to redistribute only the Standard version of the editor, with a corresponding reseller agreement, where we can provide access to the Pro-level features at an extra cost.

We are considering an amendment to the agreement with CIMCO that would allow us to include the Professional version with certain levels of the Autodesk HSM product. This is still under discussion, and we have no firm plans to do this.

We apologize for the inconvenience, and truly regret that we weren't able to provide advance notice of the change.

We'll keep you posted about what, if any, adjustments we are able to make in this area. As has been noted in various forum posts, those of you with access to prior releases are still able to use the older version of the editor, with backplot capabilities.

Thank you very much for your feedback concerning how much you value the backplot feature.

Best Regards,

Jeff Pek, Sr. Manager, Autodesk HSM

Al Whatmough, Product Manager, Autodesk HSM

I never edit g-code. If I need to change one line of g-code I turn to editing the post so it always posts what I want.

With that said, I wouldn't mind if there was no editor.

I am all for g-code verification though. Eventually I will get to doing 5x stuff and would like to verify g-code. If that is the direction you guys are thinking of heading in the future, I am all for it.

So what is the cost to keep the same functionality I purchased from HSMworks?       Backplot was in the original purchase.

I would hold tight just a bit longer. We are hoping to reinstate the backplot capability soon.

If you have previous version access, you can still use the editor from an old build.

Because they don't even have time to do their true CAM stuff.

So editor development would take even more from that time.

But there is an intern @xander.luciano that has been developing a similar tool.

Find it here: https://ncviewer.com/

And there it is in a nutshell with 23% of staff fired in the last 16
months. And thirteen down income quarters in a row. And programs like
Artcam axed. Anagnost is going to run this company into the ground
rather than admit he is wrong. In the mean time costs to users go up and
quality goes down and all Autodesk seems to want is for $1,500+ per year
customers to be replaced with Fusion360 customers. It is hard to imagine
a company whose products like HSM I used to be so enthusiastic over has
so quickly earned my complete and justifiable contempt. It's over
Laurens and there is no sense lingering and clinging to hope things will
change for the better. I figure my 2018 HSM version which was not much
more than the 2016 version will be just short of the 2020 version and I
won't have to work around any new bugs nor be angry over paying even
more for so little to be improved or fixed. Love that hole wizard thingy.

I completely disagree with you Dave. Maybe you left because it was not up to your wishes, but I see them making big steps and a lot of functions came in this year in will come in the following year. Maybe not everything is there as fast as we hope, but that is in every software company. I don't see the future so black, and even better:

backplot is back!

FYI, this (backplot) should now be available in the released R2 versions of Inventor HSM and HSMWorks.

Yawn, that's nice. Glad you are happy and I know I am much happier with
more $$ in the bank. So you say the improvements are keeping up with the
rather large price increases? Has Anagnost announced when perpetual is
ending yet? I see ADSK now has down income 13 quarters in a row so I
must have some company eh. What other programs are they killing this month?

Now you are just bashing Autodesk. No constructive argument in your post. Why do you post here? To show you anger? To save the world?

I am close to wondering why I post too since it is smooth sailing now
and I don't have to get excited about what happens anymore. Mainly I do
so because the forums send me notifications and if I feel like poking
the giant that betrayed me that day I do.

So enumerate all these improvements that have you so excited and
protective of Autodesk. I am interested in what you have to say.

Thank you for working through the issues to get this back in the product. It's much appreciated... It would be cool if there was a nice tool for pushing through the tool & stock definitions from HSM into the editor as well, it would leverage the backplot feature far more if we had that.

Try launching the editor outside of your CAM session. Then either let your program open inside an already open editor at post time... Or open an already posted NC file from within the editor. Then see if backplot works.

I've seen cases in the past where backplot doesn't work when it's been launched and opens a new file in the same action. Maybe that issue still exists with this new version.
