Help! My post processor needs to be edited; now what?

If you find yourself post processing your tool-paths and then editing the output there is some work to be done on your post processor! And if so here is what to do.

Well there are two main options:

    • Do it yourself

The second options is the one I would suggest to anyone who wants it quick, solid and without a hassle.
The first option is the one for people who want it cheap and are willing to put in effort, time and a lot of patience.

If we go the DIY route the main question is do you know JavaScript or ECMAScript?(Same thing different name)
Full info on that here: http://www.ecma-international.org/publications/files/ECMA-ST/Ecma-262.pdf

If you do not I suggest talking to someone who does or find some tutorials on the web and get a feeling for how it works and what it's capabilities are. Javascript is mostly used in web design, but the code is the same so this is a good place to start: http://www.w3schools.com/js/
If yes or after you did a little research it's time to get a feeling for the AutoDesk CAM Post Processors them selves.
Best place to start is looking at this Post Processor manual here: https://github.com/AutodeskCAM/Documentation/blob/master/Autodesk%20Post%20Processor%20manual-sm-130...
It's a work in progress so expect some changes and little faults here and there.(Some can be found in this post/Thread if you ever get confused: http://camforum.autodesk.com/index.php?topic=5937.msg23435#msg23435)

In the default post processor folder you will find the dump post processor(dump.cps). This dumps all info that is available from the cam system to the post in a file. Very convenient for making cycles work that require different height value's and pre-positioning moves, when does it get the value's and how can I control them or if you want to know the parameter for the tool Length. First thing I do when someone asks for something I don't know the answer to, what is available in the dump post that can help me solve the problem.

Last thing that is very good to know about is the post help file. Which gives short explanations on everything the post supports. It's good info if you will be doing some more serious editing and making "new" stuff. If you cannot find it, it's attached.

The Post Processor manual might give you the idea that you have to make your own post if you want changes, well of course not!!!
Almost everybody runs on edited generic versions, customized to their liking/needs.

And if you still have questions feel free to ask the users and post development team here on the forum, but as with everything have a little patience(The post team and other users have different tasks as well ;)). One advise I can give is the more clear you are in what your problem is and the more effort you put in yourself the bigger the chance you will receive a response quickly.

PS. Will update this post later.

On the file itself(Not opened) right mouse button.

At the bottom of the screen that pops up you will see something like unblock or unlock the file.

Do that and you are good to go.

I did what you suggested and nothing changed.  All I see is a list of the Contents and Index items.  Can I download it somewhere else or can you email it to me?

Thanks, Dan

Please try with this one.

And if still fails, you can try with some free chm viewer..

Thanks but I get the same thing again.

This is what I see!  Shouldn't there be explanations of the topics or is this a work in progress?

Thanks, Dan

You can click on the functions right?

I mean this is not an interactive post editing explanation.

It's just a way to look at what functions are available and what they do.

Yes I can select a function but there is no explanation, it would be nice to know what they do or at least a clue. I have to guess based on the name.

Thank You,
Dan

Hi Dan

I also struggled to see any meaningful content. Finally managed to "unblock" the downloaded help file, although it seemed to take a few attempts spread out over a few weeks.

If you right click on the .chm file and select properties, you can hopefully find the "unblock" tickbox. Once it's ticked and you close the dialog box, the option disappears of course. Like me you may have tried this but it worked just now (finally) using the file Laurens posted.

Afterwards, my help file changes from what you showed to what Laurens showed. Strange that this seems to be so obscure. Very frustrating too, to be met with such blank looks, given that I'm using a bog standard PC / W10 etc.

Thanks for the help, but I have tried all that too. I get the same thing whether its blocked or unblocked. I think the issue is with their file, but nobody seems to want to fix it.

Thank You,
Dan

We are really trying to help you here but it seems what works for everyone doesn't work for you.

That's weird so most other users don't know how to help you now.

Call your re-seller and ask if he can show you through a screen sharing application on how you can use this file.

Hi Dan,

lies your chm-file on a network path/drive? if so, it will not work when you use windows ( because of a security patch of windows )

chm-file to show must lie on a local drive or it will not work properly.

maybe you must repeat the steps to unblock.

FWIW I had to do the unblock dance a few times as well. Deleted and tried again. Left it for a bit, tried again and it worked. No rhyme or reason. Win 7 Ultimate.

Problem solved!

I was trying to run it from the downloads folder which still seemed to have a link to being online.  Noticed that in the property\details tab on the file.  So I copied the file to the inventor folder and presto, it worked!  This seems to break the online link.  Unblocking apparently does no break the link.

We have Mori Sieki mill-turn with C,B,X,Y and Z axis. We use the G68.1 when drilling with the B axis tilted. Can't seem to find a post that supports this, is there one you might suggest I try or can one be added or modified?

Your best base would probably be the Doosan Mill-turn post set to MachineTyp: Puma_MX

https://cam.autodesk.com/hsmposts?p=doosan_mill-turn_fanuc

That output G368 instead of G68.1 because Doosan incorporated more tricks into the G368 than just the G68.1 but you should be able to modify that quite easily to output G68.1 for you machine.

This post was in 2015...

Do you have any updated info or links for a DIY user of Solidworks and HSMExpress who wants to learn how to read Javascript and edit the post?

Just want a better understanding of what it means and what parts of the cam program are controlling what parts of the post processor.   ???  For example I didn't always get an M1 code after a tool change, It seemed to be random,  but later discovered that if i add a "comment" in the General Tab of the tool editor for that specific tool, then it will generate an M1 code.  This makes no sense, but ok that is how to make it work.   So how to make it post an M1 code if i don't have a comment for that tool..  Stuff like that drives me crazy..  How would I know that M1 is looking at the Comment block of the specific tool after a tool change.    Also the default post put the M1 at the end of the operation and before the tool change.  What good is that?  I want to pause after to aim my coolant on the specific tool that just loaded.

Anyway,, (rambling)  nice post, but looking for updated references..

Thank you,,
