Tool Override Home Position - Turning

Tool Override Home Position - Turning

The single Home Position in Turning is too limiting. We frequently have three turning tools, an insert drill, a boring bar, etc. in the turret, and prefer a 10" retract from the face to change tools to the insert drills (which are up to 5" long), but only a 1" retract to change to the finish turning tool from the rougher.

Instead of the "Go home" options currently I'd like to see a Home Override checkbox and distance field so a finishing tool can retract to 10" on "Go Home at End" before calling the insert drill and the Setup can have a standard Home position of 1" (or whatever is preferred) for the turning tools and cutoff.

@angelo.juras - I wasn't able to finish commenting my code today, but I will finish it and post it on Monday so you can take a look.

Thanks

I've gone through and made comments on the code that comes out of my current post processor. I currently make these parts with code produced from Solidworks and Mastercam, so I have included that code and commented what I like about it. I am switching to fusion because the associativity and parameterization seem to work much better, and that is something that I need. I have included my post-processor as well. It is a slightly modified version of the FANUC turning post-processor that replaces a canned cycle with an expanded cycle and allows pass-throughs.

Generally, it looks like there is always more code and more movement than there needs to be for a given operation.

Here is a link to a google drive folder that contains the above files as well as the .f3d for the part.

Hello @Anonymous, With regard to the enhancements that @akash.kamoolkar mentioned. Those are still on the table and we are sorting through that.

As far as the post edits, the files you sent had two extensions (.nc & .XXX)

Which is the one you like and don't like?

@angelo.juras Sounds good. The file that I like and currently use in production is the .XXX. It's got comments highlighting what it is that I like about it. The .nc has comments that show what I'd like to have changed. Thanks again.

Hey everybody,

We've added some significant "Safe Z" (previously called Home position) enhancements to the Fusion October update. Here's a summary of what was done https://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/blog/october-15-2018-product-update-whats-new/#CAM

Hi all,

Been diving back into Inventor Turning after a break from it and am having this same concern/issue.

Has there been movement on this?  Thanks.

Best,

ZK,

I'm not aware of any progress, but I haven't looked at this since
August. I did have a sharp engineering student working for me this
summer who was working through this, but he's back in school.
I did see on IG that you were working on the post processor. My same
guy did an amazing job on editing post processors, but he came up
against some stumbling blocks that he couldn't get through. Personally,
I don't have the time or patience to attempt to figure it out, I just
cut and past the code I need after F360 writes the G code.

Good luck,
