Add Outside>Inside - Inside>Outside to Horizontal

Add Outside>Inside - Inside>Outside to Horizontal

I love the Horizontal strategy, very handy... except it air cuts on open faces and leads in from the outside straight into the center of the face then works its way out. I'm not sure why this toolpath was designed to do that by default, but it's not ideal.

Adding the option to choose machining from the outside to the inside would at least allow us to 'tune' the toolpath so it's more efficient.

Question:

Wouldn't it be ideal if it is a openface it goes oustide>inside and if it's a pocket it goes Inside>Outside?

And indeed I've also been annoyed by the extra pass around the outside of open faces.

@Laurens-3DTechDraw it would be nice if it defaulted that way for sure!! But I'd still want to be able to change it. In some softer materials it's better to machine outside>inside in a pocket since the material is more stable when all the material is there. So machining the finished geometry first is better.

I've always solved the extra pass problem by using tool on centre boundary, with a small offset.  The inside out, outside in option is much needed in the horizontal strategy though.

Yup. It's definitely solvable. But it shouldn't be necessary.

I'd wholly agree with you Scott, my solution sometimes affects the passes on the inside of the tool path, and results in cusps left.

I generally use a bit of a boundary offset as well. That will often deal with that. I'm sure there are times it wouldn't.

@Anonymous

That work around only works if you select each open face separately. So a whole lot of work if you have 5 open Z-levels.

I voted for this for sure, it is badly needed.  Although if there was a way, I would rename, and merge this idea with yours, to get more votes: "

Pocket Clearing, inside-out vs outside in cutting direction".

Somewhere is that thread there is a comment that says to extend it to the horizontal strategy.  Anyways, not sure we can merge, nor rename an idea.  Being able to chose the direction, no matter the strategy, is definitely something that is needed!

There are times that imported geometry for whatever reason comes in parallel to the front plane but the horizontal strategy doesn't recognize them or allow them to be machined.  In these cases, and other times because horizontal can't be performed outside in, I select the scallop strategy. Going out to in using scallop seems to work best to reduce chipping on outer edges and it performs as I'd like except it won't run the cutter tangent to side walls and fillets like horizontal does. I've tried various settings for slope, heights, and boundaries but the toolpath scallop generates climbs up side walls some,  rises upwards in z when it's close to fillets leaving uncut areas, or stays far away from other features all together. Photos of example are attached

Isn't there a future consideration option?

Is there a reason as to why this hasn't been implemented? Seeing as other strategies allow the same option that's being requested and there have been a lot of votes on the matter it seems like this would be an obvious and maybe not all too difficult feature to add?

It comes up in every training session I do.

You should tell all your padawans to vote for this!

Yeah. I should have a preconfigured email with all the ones in it and get them to vote in each class

Haha!  well now it sort of out of the question anyway, they don't want to implement this very basic capability.

It’s now listed as implemented, awesome

oh cool!  so we should see this in the next update?

It's not. Because it was listed as implemented in October. And it's not in the product.
