Hello, can I do the following: I have hardware (bolts, screws, etc.) and I have points where I want to place them - I need to attach these hardware to these points so that I can replace the hardware with another one.

You can add hardware to an assembly and use points, in the assembly, to place them.  The part of your question that does not make sense is, why would you want to replace the hardware with another?  Why not place the correct hardware the first time?

Probably for the same reason that, before the advent of airflow simulation programs, huge wind tunnels were built to test mock-ups of aircraft to determine which wing and how would perform best, right? Ultimately, the aesthetic component should not be denied - some hardware may simply look better than others.

It's not that hard to understand, is it?

Fusion 360 just introduced the "Replace Component" command which will replace any external component, in an assembly, with another external component.  If done correctly, this is the process you desire.
