OK so there seems to be the object casting its shadow and the ground receiving it and only the second is working.
This is not correct. The ground plane and ground shadow are separate from object shadow. The reason you don't see them in render under the lower menu is because they are part of the scene. They show in design as toggles:
Ground plane and shadow and object shadow are not the same thing - and for a few good reasons:
- Ground plane is a point of reference set at the Z-0 (or if Y-up - Y-0) or the at the bottom of the lowest feature.
- Ground Shadow is the visual representation of that. Its part aesthetic and part to keep your bearings when moving around in 3D.
- Object shadow renders a shadow cast by the bodies on themselves. This provides depth of objects and really is best suited for rendering as it can be too graphically unnecessary for Design.
The ground shadows will change in render and become part of the Ground Plane Scene settings. The shadow will move and as the light source and location changes. Again this provides depth and reference.
