Hello, Is there any straight foward way to create patterns along an irregular curved surface like this?

I want to have the same end result whit the difference being I don't want a simple box, I want a premade shape following the shape of the surface. Ideally I'd like the the surface to condition the orientation of the pattern, so if I'm repeating a cilinder-like shape I'd like the bottom to snap perpendicularly to the surface.

That unfortunately isn't possible. In the video it looks like that works, but it is really the curvature of the path that determines the orientation of the patten and not the surface of the object the pattern is created on.
