I am trying to replicate creation of the following:

I have created the vertical parts but I'm not sure how to create the circular structure that starts from the outer edge and sweeps into the top oval.

Looks like Sweep or Loft to me.

Actually I've done it now, I created a sketch of the shape I wanted, then used sweep to cut the shape from a cylinder.
