Filling a complicated model?

Hi there,

So after a day on this i am asking for help.

I have a model of a GPS unit which has some slightly unusual geometry.

What I WANT to do is make a negative of the shape (mold) in two halves, the ultimate goal is to make a new case for it which it will then fit into snugly and two halves will bolt together

The problem I have is that the unit is an assembly of shelled parts (hollow on the inside) so if I combine/cut the model from a block then i get the complicated internal structure rather than the general outer shape.

Boundary fill doesn't seem to fill the way i thought it would (so it doesn't help)

I tried making a forming tool and that failed to work for me, though I admit i am not to great with how to use it..

At the end of the day I can work around this... but i don't want to!

Can anyone give me some advice on how to do it properly, i am going nuts!!!

the original file is here - note i do not want the stand (ref pictures)

https://docs.cubepilot.org/user-guides/3d-printing/here-3-stand

(sorry I tried to upload the isolated model but auotdesk  said no)

Thank you in advance

Hi,

I do not want to access unknown sources.
Therefore:
Open the file in Fusion and save it.
Then:
File > Save export as f3d locally > Attach to the next post.

First thing I would do is turn on Capture Design History.

Next thing I would do is create some Patches to close the openings so that  you have a "watertight" envelope.

In the process of doing these two steps - I noticed that you are missing a fillet?

After taking another look at this - I think I would do a simple Revolve, Extrude and Split.

First of all you are amazing

Second of all, I am definitely subscribing to your channel.

I was trying to "patch" and i tried a multitude of ways to no avail! this is exactly what i wanted to do.

Thank you so much

Be sure to go back and take another look for symmetry (sometimes it helps to have someone else look).
