cant remove support beams from stl file

hello i am trying to remove the support beams from an stl file and cant seem to figure out how to  remove the beams. when i select the model its only selecting the whole thing.

The short answer is:  Use "Direct Edit" to do this kind of editing.  The longer version of that is to use Face Groups to help.  As you can see in the video, face groups make this kind of edit easier.  But, the default face group settings generate some bad face groups, and you may have to revert to either editing the face groups, or deleting individual mesh facets.
