Version number not in file name when export stl files

Hi,

I have updated Fusion 360 to the latest version today. I have come to export my stl file, I didn't notice the version number had not been wrote in the file name so when I clicked export it wanted to over write an existing file I had already exported.

Is this something that has happened in the update?

Can I reverse or change a setting so I automatically generate and STL file with the current version of file I have just saved?

Thanks

Graham

Hi @graham1980_bigballs ,

Yes, I’ve noticed the same behavior, the version number doesn’t appear in the file name when exporting a mesh (STL) from the File > Export option. I’ll need to investigate further to confirm if this change is recent or related to the latest update.

In the meantime, I suggest using File > Save as Mesh instead. This workflow still includes the version number in the exported file name and should help you avoid overwriting existing files.

I’ll share an update here once I have more information.

I have the same issue and it happens with STEP file exports as well.

OK, I thought it was just me.  Same issue for .3mf exports.

Hello @luciengrise @graham1980_bigballs @PBelles ,

I wanted to provide an update regarding the missing version numbers in exported file names.

This behavior is intentional. In a recent update, Fusion removed the automatic v1, v2, v3… suffix from file names when using File > Export. This change was made because many customers found the version tag confusing or inconvenient, and it wasn’t consistent with other export workflows. Users can still manually add a version number if needed.

I hope this clarifies why you’re seeing this change.

Hey @dsouzasujay ,

thanks for clarifying that topic. Is there an option or addon to enable automatic version extension again? All of our processes rely heavily on the versioning of files and instructing all team members to manually add the version seems like a risky option.

Best Regards

Malte

It's a shame that the update has stopped automatically adding the version number to STL exports. As Fusion currently has no setting to automatically force this to be added. You will need to manually rename the file before exporting. There is no way in the app to override this behavior.

Well, Fusion has always had a bug where the version number would be WRONG on an exported file.

I guess they just decided that, instead of fixing the bug, they'd remove the feature that made the bug obvious.

Great job, wonderful way to treat the customer.

Really not a fan of losing this without an option of restoring it.  I like my version numbers - I like them visible, and I like them on Export.

Same here, I am still very much missing that feature in my daily design workflow. It's kinda strange to me that the dev team decided to only remove the version number for designs - in drawing exports it is still there...

Versions are also gone from the display, and they are gone from Save as Mesh.

My workflows were heavily dependent on using the version number and now I can't even see it anywhere.  The "History" button doesn't even show version numbers, just save dates and the description.

What a mess.

Honestly, this is enough for me to look for an alternative CAD solution.

It seems like this is part of the collaborative editing hub update. I did not update my fusion instance until this morning, so the complete loss of versions in these hubs did not occur to me until now. For my team this really is a deal breaker since versions are deeply embedded in our workflows to ensure traceability across different platforms.

@dsouzasujay Is there any information from Autodesk regarding this issue?

Okay, I can't figure out, how a company claiming to be professional in the field of CAD can do such a change INTENTIONALLY without the option to preserve old behaviour. The assumption it won't break anyone's workflow is preposterous. Bring the versions on export back!
