Slow performance with guidelines

On both my laptop, which I expect to be slower, and my desktop, which I do not expect to be slower, my computers have trouble with an extrusion command. I have a shape that I've extended construction lines from, and when I started to draw the lines connecting the tips of each construction line (its like doing a manual offset) the computer would take about twenty seconds to compute connecting one line to another. Then, when I extruded it, the program became unresponsive. I knew I could have left it, but instead I'll be redrawing my work in a way that isn't hard on the computer, but gets the job I'm wanting to do done.

What I'm also wondering is if there are any ways to increase performance. I come from photoshop, and in it you can manually create swap files and change performance settings. I'll do huge image stitching on my desktop, and it does them well. I also have 16gb of ram on that machine. It's some sort of nicer processor and nice graphic card from a few years ago, don't remember the details. If there was some way to mess with settings, I think I could get it to preform better. (I did find some minor performance settings, but I'm more looking for swap file locations)

You should not have performance problems with such a sketch, unless there is underlying drama from an import or similar.

The AD guys will need access to that file for an answer of substance.

Might help....
