Simple Component Timeline Question

I have a bunch of components in a larger design. I'd like to add a new component and have it appear in the timeline in between two of the existing components. How do I do this easily. When I activate the parent component, the timeline explodes to thousands of steps with each sub component exploded. How do I find the spot that's in between two existing sub components so I can place my new component in the correct time sequence? No doubt there's some simple timeline feature I don't know about -- like one to automatically minimize or group-ize the items in a component so they are all hidden in a single icon.  I do know how to group timeline items, but that begs the question of finding all the items in a given component so I can group them.  Also, if I use groups in a component timeline, I think it's NOT possible to make a larger timeline group that contains the whole component.  I do know about component color swatches. That seems the best way to find components in the timeline. Just wondering if there's a more automatic way of un-exploding the component timeline?
