parameter name being replaced by value - bug?

Hi,

I found an annoying misfeature (bug - in other words).

If you create solid shapes that have more than 1 parameter (ie box, cylinder, torus and spring) and you use parameter names, those names do NOT populate the dialog, if they were used before the dialog box appears, which can happen if you don't click to complete the initial dimension input.

For example, creating a box - after setting the plane and location, use a parameter name for the width, tab to next dimension and enter a height parameter name.  Press enter to accept - The dialog appears waiting for the last parameter (depth).  Using the depth parameter name the name appears in the dialog box, but width and height are only populated with values and not the parameter name.  See attached screencast as a demo.

This means that if I'm using parameters, I have to enter the parameter name twice for it to be incorporated - something I often forget to do, and it can cause problems if I have a model and change the parameter later on, particularly if I haven't realised a dimension is fixed instead of parametric.

Regards

Peter

I agree, you have found a annoying bug.  I would like to offer a workaround.  Skip assigning the parameters during the box sketch creation and add them in the dialog box.  They display correctly and are retained for later editing clarity.  Take a look at the Screencast.

I agree you have found a bug and needs to be fixed.  I would like to offer a workaround.  Skip assigning your parameter values to the sketch, go right to the box dialog and assign them there.  Take a look at the Screencast.

Hi @jhackney1972

Many thanks - I know there are several work arounds, but all of them require more button and mouse clicks.

I'm using F360 in the context of cabinet making, and I use the box shape to create the walls, shelves and back.  The problem is that length, width and height in those 3 cases almost never correspond to the ply thickness and width/height, or width/depth or depth/height.  I find it easier and quicker to draw the boxes in context and assign the parameters as I go along.

I've lived with this for a long time, and as I was creating another cabinet I hit this issue again, and thought it was about time I did something about it 🙂

This is many years old and I've reported and complained about it many times.

The reason the parameters in the initial sketch don't "stick' is because as soon as the 3D geometry is created, while still in the dialogue the sketch and associated parameters are automatically deleted.

If you want primitives to be parametric you need to place the parameters into the UI parameter fields.

Sounds like it’s time for them to de-digitize (aka removing finger).

Just one of many anomalous UI features that F360 likes to make its own and won’t fix in favour of spending resources adding bigger features.  To me it’s basic usability, and should be on top of their list.
