Open DXF BUG.

Open DXF assumes you want to insert the DXF not open! In the attached file there's a DWG and a DXF, if you try opening the DWG using Open from the file menu it uploads and opens fine. With the DXF you get an error saying the file doesn't contain valid geometry for insert. Also both files are in inches but Fusion opens them in mm and ignors your preferences.

And why are DXF files blocked by the forum?

Hi @HughesTooling

What is the intended behavior for "opening" a DXF? There is no 3D data (I think - at least I don't think Fusion reads 3D DXFs) so it coming through as an "insert" makes sense to me.

What do you think?

Thanks,

Karina

Did you try opening the DWG? I expect the DXF to be treated the same way, if I wanted to insert it I'd use InsertDXF.

I just tested opening one from my computer and it did open as i'd expect it to:

OpenDxf.gif

The same happens for me when i open after uploaded. I can't test the zip you uploaded - its invalid(if its a dxf/dwg it too is invalid)

@ryan.bales  Don't know what went wrong with the zip file, attached it again. Any idea why DXF is not allowed as an attachment, seems like one on the most widely used file formats for drawings.

The DXF only contains a 3d cube, no 2d data. Maybe the importer should use the same method as with DWG if the local 2d importer fails.

@ryan.bales  Also the error needs updating, this is what made me think it was trying to import. Clicking more info does nothing either.

@TheCADWhisperer  The thing is you can open a DWG without uploading to a project using Open and I expected open to work the same for a DXF. I know insert DXF will not read a 3d DXF, perhaps Open should try the local 2d importer and if it fails then import\Open as it does a DWG.

@HughesTooling, @TheCADWhisperer . Yes i agree, that error does need some work. I sent it to the team. I think the gist of the error is that File>open doens't translate 3D dxf like 3D DWG (why is beyond me and a different issue) But the error is saying you are importing/inserting and needs to say "Open".
