No Auto Recover File After Crash

I've been working on a project this morning and didn't have a save for the past 1+ hour. F360 had a hard crash and sent the log files with the dialog box that opened. When I restarted F360 I was expecting to get a prompt to open an auto recover file but I didn't and searching my HD I don't see anything saved from today, only last night.

I'm thinking I've lost everything I just did this morning but before I go reinvent the wheel I thought I'd double check if there's anything else I could possibly check.

Hi @george

Thanks for posting! I had a look at your crash recovery reports and it appears that the crash you experienced was due to a known problem in which the CTRL key is held while in the long left click "Select Other" menu. Avoiding the use of the CTRL key while the Select Other menu is active should help you avoid this crash - I have made a note of this post on our development teams report for this behavior (FUS-25555). We appreciate you bringing this to our attention!

To check for any recovery files you may have missed, I would begin looking for the file in the crash recovery folder in Fusion, illustrated in this article. Remember to enable hidden files and folders!

If this does not work, it is possible that some missing files have not been uploaded to A360 cloud storage and may be found in your local cache folders, which you will need to enable hidden files and folders for Windows or Mac to access. To check your local cache folders:

  1. Open Windows File Explorer or Finder (Mac).
  2. Browse to the following filepaths;
    1. Windows: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Autodesk\Autodesk Fusion 360\<Custom Log-in ID>\W.login\F
    2. Mac: ~Library/Autodesk/Application Support/Autodesk/Autodesk Fusion 360/ <Custom Log-in ID>/W.login/F
  3. Designs containing assemblies with x-references will be found at the filepaths below;
    1. Windows: %LOCALAPPDATA%l\Autodesk\Autodesk Fusion 360\<Custom Log-in ID>\W.login\Q\_XRef_
    2. Mac: ~Library/Autodesk/Application Support/Autodesk/Autodesk Fusion 360/ <Custom Log-in ID>/W.login/Q/_XRef_

I would like to mention that the auto-save feature should not be relied upon 100% of the time - it is a good idea to save to the cloud frequently and create a local archive copy towards the end of the design process. If Fusion 360 is actively working on a process (e.g. rendering, solving a simulation, using the edit form command, etc.. ) then the auto-save can be skipped. Instead of relying on auto-save, you could use a lesser known feature allows the save a recovery file which does not sync with the cloud. To manually save a recovery version of a document, you could use the keyboard command:

Windows:
CTRL+SHIFT+S
Mac OS:
CMD+SHIFT+S

This recovery file will only be saved locally - no new cloud version will be created. The file will be found in the crash recovery folder as a "backup" format file, as described in this article.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks for taking a look. I had gone through those articles and searched my PC but didn't find anything from today which I thought was odd because I thought a recovery file was created based on your "Automatic Recovery Save time interval" set in your preferences.

I do see a bunch of files going back to last year. Would clearing my cache remove all of those old files?

Hi @george

Thanks for the response! When a command is active in Fusion 360 the autosave function can be skipped - this may have been why a recovery file was not created in your situation. This can happen a lot when working in the Sculpt workspace particularly.

Where are the files you are seeing located (at what filepath)? If you would like to clear out all the files locally cached on your machine you can always navigate to the filepath below:

%localappdata%\Autodesk\Autodesk Fusion 360\<Alphanumberic ID#>

and delete the W.login folder. Please note that this will delete all the local file data on your computer - designs that are not yet synced to the cloud will be permanently deleted if you do not back them up elsewhere or if they are not yet saved in the cloud/ Data Panel.

Hopefully this helps! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi @paul.clauss

I haven't used sculpting in a very long time.

I'm running Win7 x64 and I find files here:

C:\Users\George\AppData\Local\Autodesk\Autodesk Fusion 360\X8JKQ79G5MA4\OfflineMigration\BackupDesign\W.login

and here

C:\Users\George\AppData\Local\Autodesk\Autodesk Fusion 360\X8JKQ79G5MA4\W.login

In each of those are sub directories with single letter names (D, F, M, and Q for the later and d, and F for the former). 115MB for the former directory size and 458MB for the later directory size.

Hi @george

Thanks for the response! Clearing your local cache should delete all subdirectories from the folders below;

  • %localappdata%\Autodesk\Autodesk Fusion 360\<ID>
  • %localappdata%\Autodesk\production\JobManager360\<ID>
  • %appdata%\Autodesk\Autodesk Fusion 360\<ID>

So all of the directories you mentioned will be deleted by clearing your local cache.

Hopefully this helps! Please let me know if you have any questions.

It looks like I encountered the same issue --- Fusion 360 crashed while I was holding control to prevent spline snapping, and accidentally left clicked and opened the "Select Other" Menu. And like the previous user, my work for the past hour was lost and there was no autosave prompt when I restarted Fusion 360. I could not find the autorecovery files in any of the locations indicated in the post either. Please fix this bug!
