insert into current design on Mac

I am having great difficulty getting the insert into current design to do anything. I have tried innumerable both selecting the option from the context Manu and draging-and-dropping into an open, saved design. I have provided a link to a video recording of a simple test case. Any thoughts about what I can do?

Hi @rwpinto763BC ,

Check if you are on latest fusion build, from help>about. Let me know the fusion build number.

Restart fusion 360 and try inserting the design again.

If it's not working,  please send Diagnostic log files.

I am running Mac Big Sur 11.2.3. I have tried restarting Fusion 360 and rebooting the machine without any change in behavior. I have attached a Diagnostic zip file. Thanks.

Inserting a design into an existing one by drag-&-drop does not work on macOS.

It pains me to write this 😉

Hi @rwpinto763BC ,

As @TrippyLighting said, we cant drag and drop the external references but right click and 'Insert into Current Design' should work.
From the attached log files i can see there are some offline cache files in your

Follow below steps:

  1. Clear all non-design data from the cache.
    • Select the Help drop-down menu (Top-right hand corner of Fusion 360)
    • Select Support & Diagnostics
    • Select Clear Cache Data
    • Fusion will restart
      Screenshot 2021-04-05 at 9.09.35 PM.png
  2. Clear your local files in the cache
    • Enable Text command
    • Screenshot 2021-04-05 at 9.14.25 PM.png
    • In that text bar, paste this command
      • CloudFileStore.ClearFileCacheForTest
    • Hit enter.
    • This will clear your local files in the cache that's collected for Fusion 360

See if you can insert the design.

Hello, Clearing the cache has not helped. I cleared cache, which required Fusion to restart, and I entered the text command to clear local cache. Any further suggestions?

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately, I can not get the Insert Into Current Design to work either.

@rwpinto763BC ,

Would you be able to invite me (Sujay<dot>dsouza<at>autodesk<dot>com) to that project? That'll help us investigate the issue and see if there can be any workaround possible in the meantime.

I think that I have a workaround, as shown in the attached video. Normally, when using either the trackpad or one-button mouse, I press control and select, slide over the item to be selected, and release the select button. That process does not work. Instead, as you will see in the video, I press control and select to bring up the contextual menu, slide the cursor into the build panel and release the control button (for some reason the context menu stays active), and slide the cursor over the context menu and click to select the item.

Hi @rwpinto763BC ,

I should have asked for the screencast video. Screencast will capture keyboard events with your recording.

To 'Inserting into current design', No need to use 'Control' key

From the datapanel, Right click on the file and select 'Inserting into current design', that should work.

Thanks for your response and your help. I am using a Mac and either a trackpad or a single-button mouse. I have to use the control key.

Hi @rwpinto763BC ,

Sorry, In the last reply i was not able to understand "one-button mouse"

For CAD designing it's recommended to use a regular mouse.

Also you can customise your Mac trackpad as below.

Goto System Preferences>TrackPad, Change the settings.

If you are serious about using CAD then my recommendation would be to use a normal 2-button mouse with click-scroll wheel. Many years back (before Fusion 360) for an entire year  I tried to make the MagicMouse work with a CAD application (Better Touch tool and  so forth) and it never worked satisfactorily.

Continuous work with the trackpad in a 3D application I also fid slow and tiring. While the touchpad controls in Blender work much smoother than in Fusion 360, for real 3D work I've found a real mouse essential.
