I do not think you are off on the right foot. You are having to created sub-components inside of forms to try and get a viable joint. I believe you would be a lot better off to create your components directly and then joints will be a lot easier. Take a look at the attached example of one motion joint between similar components and see if it is a better idea for you. I tried to mimic your assembly joint by making the socket slightly larger than the ball but that can be adjusted.
