Generative Design (Design space setup)

My question is related to the configuration of the preserve and the obstacle geometry. I have a single body, and I have seen that the menus only refer to bodies and not faces. In this case having the constraints that you will see below is it logical to use split face/body or are there other alternatives to be able to select this specify regions, as well to preserve the inner space and holes?

My constraints for this component are: 

1.  Do not modify mechanical interfaces (picture above) and holes but, if the case, add proper over
material in order to allow post machining.

2. Maintain the inner space in order to mount the joint and, at the same time, allow the passage of the cables.

This is where using the generative model (akin to a manufacturing model or simulation model) is helpful. You can use the geometry tools there to break apart the main form without messing with the original CAD design. Once you start to specify those interface geometries as new bodies, you can then use the obstacle tools to create the fasteners.
