Fusion freezes but does not use all resources

Fusion often freezes when editing bodies converted from a detailed mesh. I know it doesn't handle those kinds bodies well, but during those freezes Cpu usage does not go over 15% and RAM usage stays below 70%. Is this normal, or is there a way to make fusion use more before freezing?

Your answer may not be incorrect, but it is incomplete.
It's just not true that fusion360 uses only a small portion of your CPU power because it's the single threaded algorithm. And whoever you answered wanted to overclock their processor. Which won't solve the problem.

"A core" refers to hardware, whereas a thread is a software construct. I provided a link so you don't have to refer to questionable resources.

I have used many CAD software professionally over a span of 3 decades. I've programmed in computer graphics rendering software including a mandelbrot algorithm and a Bresenham algorithm in x86 assembler.

I currently use mostly Fusion 360 and ZW3D. I've used Solid Works since 1998. Currently on my machine are Fusion 360, SolidWorks 2017, Autodesk Inventor, and ZW3D. I've worked with Alibre design for a number of years as well but don't use it anymore.

Based on that experience I can say that there are areas where Fusion 360 is slower and some, where it is faster.

If you have to refer to Google, that means you clearly don't have enough 1st hand experience and as such for me this conversation is over!

A few years ago during my school education I was also satisfied with fusion360. Only fusion360 has just become slower and slower. Just mentioning google doesn't mean I don't have 1st hand experience.
Fusion360 is indeed fast in the design process, but the program itself is just not fast.
How long do you think the UI of a cad program should hang before you can continue working?

So this whole thing is based on a 15-20 years old programming, where the program can not use  multi thread CPU and GPU resources?  REALLLY?

What a s*****

I just built up a windows desktop computer because fusion was crashing/freezing so regularly on mac. First model i open now i did and it still freezes when working with a relatively small array of 15x15. I understand if it is hardware limited but the idea that there's no way to optimise it or improve performance by getting better hardware is crazy. How is this slower than blender free software. How is not making it able to be optimised for hardware viable for professional software or work situations.

Can you share a design where that freezing occurs?

In my not insignificant professional experience in CAD and 3D modeling, the vast majority of performance problems are the result of less than ideal workflows rather than hardware limitations.

Comparing Blender with Fusion or any other CAD software is mostly nonsense.

Most users of fusion360 are users who are not allowed to share their drawings with third parties, and certainly not with people who do not even work for autodesk. Fusion360 does have problems with performance. Just look at it when you want to generate a 2D drawing. With complex assemblies fusion360 is simply very slow and freezes. Since the UI Thread is used it is also no longer possible to cancel a view.

In practice it often happens that it is not always possible to have an ideal workflow (build-up of the features) of your model. This is partly due to models that are not drawn in fusion or that after a number of years major changes are made to the model, causing the ideal workflow of your model to disappear, especially if the adjustments have to be made quickly.

You are right that you cannot compare Fusion360 with other Cad software. Other Cad software hardly freezes and also crashes much less often in contrast to Fusion360.

Fusion360 is a great program if you want to build a model parametrically, but what TrippyLight also indicates is that your workflow should always be optimal, unfortunately this is not always possible in practice for various reasons.

If you have meshes or parts with many faces, then Blender or Rhino 3d is probably more suitable.

But I understand that sometimes you can go completely crazy with Fusion360 freezes, and especially when you hear from others (Trippy) that they have no problems with the performance of fusion360 and that it would be due to your workflow.

I don't think as a general statement that is true. At least not based on the last 10 years her on the forum and thousands of designs I have looked at over that period of time!

There certainly are people that cannot share their designs due to NDA's. That's fair, and isn't a problem. But obviously that makes it difficult to help. I would also assess that due to Fusion's low price point is accessible to a wide range of users, including those that accept NDA work, but don't nearly have the knowledge or skill set to help themselves in case there are problems. However, if you do NDA work, that is a necessity.

I usually also cannot share the models I work on either in my day job, or the freelance work I do occasionally.

Yep, I also find drawing creation slow and unpleasant to work with, particularly for designs that have a lot of detail. Fortunately I don't have to do that a lot.

Most users that come to the forum and complain about performance have problems with modeling performance.

Freezing can have a number of causes. I do experience this when surface modeling more challenging geometry, but would not characterize this per se as a performance problem.

I usually don't experience freezing during "normal" modeling or when using patterns, except when they are very large.

I would also appreciate it if you would refrain from twisting my words to suit your argument! My workflows also aren't always ideal, but I experiment quite a it to see what works and what doesn't. If there's an area that i feel can use improvements, I report it and provide data, e.g. a model a workflow description and often a screencast.

That's all I am asking for when a user reports performance problems. If you can share the design, please do so.

I you cant t, then please completely lose you s**t when I am asking for a model!

How do I twist your words. You yourself say that freezes can be caused by a wrong workflow. That you indicate that you have to experiment with Fusion360 to see what works and what doesn't says enough.

And, again, you reinterpret my words 😕

Experimentation with different workflows is the best way to find the limitations of the tool you are using. I don't do that because I run constantly into performance problems. I do that to learn, and often enough I find the limitation is my own understanding. Then I study the subject and ask questions until I have found a solution.

The end result of that is that I rarely run into the problems other people report 😉

If you don't experiment and if you don't fail at least occasionally you don't learn!

Yes, experimenting with the tools that a program has is good if you want to learn how to use Fusion360, but having to figure out what causes Fusion360 freezes is ridiculous.😂🤣🤣😂🤣🤣😂🤣🤣😂🤣🤣😂🤣🤣💀

This is the job of the software developer.

I wanted to write more about what you just wrote, but it's not necessary. You confirm exactly what the people who respond to this topic also have problems with, but they don't want to spend endless time trying to figure out what causes Fusion360 freezes.

Please don't. Clearly, you are only accepting your incredibly negative point of view. We'll have to agree to disagree.

It is clear that you find it positive and quite normal to have to experiment with different workflows, to find out for yourself what causes Fusion360 to freeze and what not.

yep agreed, it's hard to share files. I think a part of it might be if you're using alot of interdependent parameters like I am or large arrays. Along with capturing the design history. Even then the lack of information about what's causing the slow down's is the real problem. It's not necessarily the cpu so what is it?

If it was more transparent about what we need to use hardware or software wise then at least we'd know what we need to spend to get enough performance.

Hi, just read the above responses dont know how it got slightly combative. I think we're just looking for more information. I cant share the actual file because as it's part of an active research project. I've attached a similar file though. Basically it's a grid of square holes in a rectangular block, using parameters to make sure it's easy to scale by changing the number of holes in the height and width. The problem i have is that it's very slow even to make a 30x30 grid of those basic holes.

I know some ways to optimise it (splitting it into smaller grids and joining them, or making it in blender and importing but these both have problems). Making it as multiple sketches helps a bit but not much. I've tried the graphics optimisation but it doesn't make a massive impact, especially as I try and move up to something more like a 100x100 grid. I think the main problem is the ambiguity around how to optimise it, either with the design or hardware setup.

I read it was the cpu, but when i upgraded to a 14600f it improve and didn't fully use the single cores. The advice about optimising the design also seems more random snippets of advice you get from people. I think if it was clearer what we need to do either hardware wise for better performance (I found macbook pro more reliable than windows strangely) or the best practices for optimising designs for performance (like a tutorial or advice on how to debug slow performance). I think that'd be really helpful. It's really easy to find this for programming but for fusion as it's closed source/black box it's just much harder to debug.

Any advice you'd have would be really helpful. thanks!

I looked at your model and honestly don't know what more information you need.

Using sketch patterns is not a recommended workflow in any CAD application.

Many other CAD applications license the (2D only) D-Cubed sketch engine, which is very fast, so you can get away with it, but it still is not recommended. \

There are hundreds of threads on this forum where we explain this.

If you extrude one hole and thed. use a feature pattern, it will be faster. I might have time to demonstrate later.

Edit: Attached is what I described

Amazing that's so much better, thank you!

I wish i'd used that approach before it would have saved alot of time. Are there any courses, resources or tutorials you recommend to run through those optimal modelling techniques and how to structure a project. I went through some online when i started but they were either too basic or I wasn't sure how correct their approaches were.

Thanks again for the help.

I am dealing with a 2 d drawing and a large pattern 12x12in, fusion keeps freezing up and everything turns black for a few seconds than it comes back. Especially happens when I use the trim command. I have an I7-9700f, 128gb ram, OS is on WD Black NVME and 3080ti graphics. none of the cores are maxed most I see on a single core is 17% usage and it still freezes up. What could be the bottleneck?

i have been dealing with the exact same problems as you guys, whenever i try to convert a medium sized mesh into a solid, or even try to import a big file into another file the App just crashes without even hitting 20procent on my cpu cores. i used to have a rtx2060 i7 10750h system and i taught that somehow was the problem. Now i have i9 13980hx with rtx4090 64gb of ram and i am getting crashes in the exact same spots as my old machine as if nothing has changed. Did the developer team or community found a way to solve this problem?
i am not using any one of the 24 cores i have anywhere above 15 procent and my gpu less than 2 and ram 20gb in the clear.
