if you take a look at the two pictures you can see that i used a decal on the upper face. i wanted the picture to curve around the edges, so i checked chain faces. i the second picture you can see that it has made a weird reflection of the decal on top. in the last picture you can see my decal settings

do you know what is causing this or how to fix it?

Hi @Anonymous

Decals have trouble with curved surfaces like you have - I would recommend using a custom appearance instead. Here's a video with how to do that. I'd be happy to show you how to do this with your file if you share it here.

Cheers!

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for sharing those!

So I took a look at the file, and in this case it works pretty well when you turn off 'chain faces' and then select the curved edges individually.

The way to do this with an appearance I have detailed in this screencast. This is a really nice workflow that results in very customizable appearances. The texture/reflectiveness etc. can be set to preference, unlike with attached canvases.

Let me know what you think!

thanks for the support - a hole tutorial! really appreciate it. i tried both solutions and both worked perfectly - though the appearance one gave me a lot more customization. i will definitely use the forums again.
