F360 2.0.3620 global UI bug: window unresponsive!

I have confirmed a pretty nasty bug in this release for Mac OS X. I'm running OS X 10.11.6. I've confirmed the bug on two separate machines. A MacPro 2012, and Macbook Pro 2010. Both have the bug.

The entire 3D design window becomes unresponsive. I've spent a day trying to figure out the exact trigger to bug.

1) have F360 as active OS X application, running in foreground

2) switch to another OS X application that covers up the F360 main window. (or perhaps hide F360 with CMD-H)

3) switch back to F360

4) window rollover and click in F360 window contents is unresponsive.

5) use menus in F360 to create new empty 3d design tab

6) switch back to original 3d design tab

7) now window contents in F360 are responsive.

This is a nasty bug!

HI Paul, that's one click easier that making a new window tab. I'll do that in the mean time. Thanks!

Paul, just wondering if this UI bug is still being considered for a fix. The bug is still present in the latest build as of today.

Got it. We still have work to do.

The problem happens when you select the Fusion dock icon with the mouse pointer directly on top of the timeline.

This is particularly frustrating because we tried hard to fix this issue with the information you gave us. It's possible the fix regressed between development and release, or I wasn't testing it correctly.  In any case, we're looking at it as a priority right now to put it to bed once and for all. We have all we need to fix it, and I thank you for that. Sorry for dropping the ball on this one.

Update: We can't fix it by Christmas, but finally we have begun the work updating the component used in Fusion that controls behavior of things in Fusion like the display of the timeline. This effort will take months. Thanks for your continued patience and for reminding me to update this thread.

One thing you can try is dragging the bottom edge of the Fusion window to just above where the dock sits when it appears. That prevents the overlapping effect and thus this issue is prevented. Or you could just not hide the dock. Sorry to only offer workarounds at this point, but for now you can keep it from happening by doing one of these things.

Thanks Phil, glad to hear it still being on the active part of the roadmap 🙂

And although not in for xmas, having something to look forward to in 2019 already is good 😉

Hi Paul, it's been over a year since I've nailed down the trigger of the F360 UI freezing bug. It still persists to this day, but seems even worse now. I'm wondering what ever happened to this bug report?

Sincerely,

Noel

@teknoel

Are you talking about this problem?

bug zone.png

If you are, here's an update: We are working on the update that "may" allow us to fix this. It will be released within weeks. That does not mean, however, that this bug is fixed, or that it can be fixed any time soon.

This was the update from just a couple months ago:

"Update: We can't fix it by Christmas, but finally we have begun the work updating the component used in Fusion that controls behavior of things in Fusion like the display of the timeline. This effort will take months. Thanks for your continued patience and for reminding me to update this thread.

So while we still consider this a high priority bug, work remains to fix the issue. In the mean time, avoid clicking on the Fusion F in your dock when it sits on top of your timeline. If you do accidentally trigger this effect, simply moving your mouse over the timeline will stop the badness. It's pretty easy to avoid this or break out of it.

Which makes me concerned that you say it's somehow getting worse. Can you provide some details to help me understand how?

Thanks,

Hi Phil,

Here's another trigger which kills the UI: Every time F360 auto-saves
design files, the UI becomes unresponsive, same as switching to another
app.

It's really not an option to make my window smaller. I need to use the full
screen.

You're correct about fooling F360 into re-enabling the UI by dragging over
the time-line region.

This issue has been bothering me for two-odd years as well. Sad to not see a fix by now.

The workaround that I found is to use F360 in full-screen mode (green circle left in taskbar). It would predictably get stuck after the triggers that one of the other posters found, or unnoticeably when switching applications and coming back to F360 only to be screwed again. But this hasn't happened since it's been in full-screen mode.

Verified this workaround on my 2016 MacBook Pro and also my current 2019 MacBook Pro MacOS 10.16.4 with auto-hide of the dock enabled.

Just to add: I've tried F360 every now and then for several years, and I've always eventually given up and gone away with the impression that it's an unuseable pile of garbage, purely because of this bug. I only just stumbled on this thread and gave it another go with Dock autohide turned off, and it's a revelation.

I dread to think how many mac users have tried Fusion and given up thinking it was dreadful, simply because this massive, showstopping bug has existed for literally years!

Hi,

As of this week, with the latest update, this issue is fixed.

  1. If you haven't updated yet this week, shut down Fusion and restart it.
  2. Click the clock icon in the top bar to watch the update progress, click Restart when it finishes.

The current build number is found in the Help > About box. It is 2.0.8156.

At first blush it does indeed appear to be fixed. Praise the polygon gods! And thank you.

I had reluctantly switched back to Onshape due to this bug alone.

Thanks for the update, at first glance it seems fixed indeed. Not sure why this had to take 3+ years, but hey :). Could it be that finally there's a good, cost-effective Mac CAD solution :D?

--edit-- Oh and yes @fusion1AE298 "I dread to think how many mac users have tried Fusion and given up thinking it was dreadful, simply because this massive, showstopping bug has existed for literally years!" --> All those non-vocal people being disappointed once again... Simply good, cost-effective CAD is the only thing stopping us from ditching Windows altogether. Oh man that would yield massive operational (IT) cost reductions and productivity increase.

Yep, I've been using for a few months now and, aside from the occasional need to restart (literally only a few times, which I can forgive), the bug has been fixed. F360 is now a really, really powerful tool for mac users in my eyes and I won't hesitate to recommend. Thanks again to whomever championed getting this bug fixed!

Just came here to say that the bug still persists on F360 2.0.8560 on Mac High
Sierra 10.13.6, Pro Retina i7. No other programs open except Firefox. I came to Fusion this year after a decade in Solidworks and as another user said, this bug alone made me feel like Fusion was completely unworkable. After coming back to it today and finally finding these threads after months of constantly restarting from selection/sketching issues, I can report that unhiding the dock and moving the fusion window away from overlapping with the dock does seem to fix the issue. It is possible to make the dock smaller in settings so that less screen space is lost, but still not ideal.

Super frustrating before so this workaround feels like a monumental improvement!
