Creating a smooth surface without cutting

Hi all -

I am trying to create a smooth surface from the edges of a quad-mesh which was converted to b-splines; it's similar to a jagged edge of a mountain.

I have tried: sweeping a line, filling and trying to trim the fill, but nothing works.  I believe I can cut the edges to make a linear surface and then extrude upwards, but is there no way of not cutting the edges and somehow creating a smooth projection?

Without the model itself, it's a bit hard to tell for certain.  But, it looks like this is a surface model.  Is that correct?  If so then define the plane you want to cut it using a work plane (construction plane), and use Split Body to split the body into two.  Select the piece(s) you don't want, and use Remove to get rid of them.

If you want to share your model, we can provide a screencast.
