Create Drawing from Multiple Selections Issue

I have a large model of an assembly line, with several machines as sub components. I am attempting to make a drawing of one machine (subcomponent). I have turned off visibility of all components that should not be in the drawing. I click file, new drawing, from design. I deselect Full Assembly as a reference. To select the components I left click and drag a box enclosing all 604 visible components and hit OK.

Inexplicably, the resulting base view contains components that are not visible in the model, meaning there is no way I could have selected them. I have attempted it several times, and occasionally most of the visible components aren't even shown in the view. So its either too many components shown, or not enough shown, but never the correct components shown.

Hi @shawn.parella,

Thank you for posting in the forum! Could you share a public link to the drawing with me so I can take a closer look?

Also, would you mind recording a screencast of the issue or attach some screenshots of where you are seeing the issue?

I shared a screencast with you that should illustrate the issue very well.

Thank you for sending me the screencast!

Does it make a difference if you select components through the browser instead of using window selection  (left clicking and dragging)?

If that doesn't help, could you share a public link to the drawing? You can send me a public link through a private message as well.

@masa.minohara I think I reported the same problem a while ago in this thread. I don't think the excuse some components were imported is valid, I think it's just down to complexity of components and subcomponents.

Manually selecting components in the browser appears to generally work, but I've not tried clicking all 604 components and subcomponents. I tried to shift-select all components and then deselect the hidden ones, but subcomponents are not highlighted, so hidden subcomponents can not be excluded.

Maybe I'm overthinking this. Here is the simplified question: How do I make a drawing of the model I see on the screen?

Masa, I also sent you a link to the drawing.

Hi @shawn.parella,

Thank you for sharing your drawing! However, I'm having difficulty reproducing the issue on my end. I think I followed the exact same steps to create a drawing from the design but the result was different. Could you try downloading the drawing from your public link and creating a new drawing from the assembly file to see if that makes a difference? I'm assuming the issue is specific to the design.

I'll send a screencast of what I'm seeing to you shortly.

Masa, what you show in your screencast is the other result that I mentioned before: too many components. Notice how at 0:24 several components that were not visible are suddenly shown in blue as being selected. For example, your new drawing shows a motor in the middle of the side view that is not visible in the model. The model shown at 0:48 does not match the side view shown at 0:50.

I downloaded the link and made drawings of the new file and made a discovery:

1 If the whole assembly line (top level component) is the active component when the machine is selected, then too few components will be on the drawing.

2 If the machine is the active component when the selection is made, then too many components will be on the drawing.

Thank you for your response! I don't know how I could miss something that obvious, and I am sorry about that.

I'll escalate this to the development team for further investigation, and I'll post more information as soon as I hear back from them.

I apologize for the inconvenience.

Hi @shawn.parella,

The development team is actively working on this issue but at this moment we are not sure when this will be fixed unfortunately.
