Body/Component with zero volume

Hi,

I have a 3D mould that I have created in Fusion 360. I've had it 3D printed, and now wanted to use Fusion 360 to tell me the volume of the part I'm moulding when I'm mixing the resin to go in the mould.

This should be really simple. I used the combine-cut command, while keeping the tool (the mould model), to create the moulded form inside. Then I right-clicked and selected properties, however the properties are blank?

The component has one body and it's a solid body, rather than a mesh or a surface, but it only tells me an area and the density of the material I have selected, rather than a volume?

I've tried going back and recreating the form in a different order but it doesn't seem to change anything - the combine command seems to zero the volume every time, even though the volume of the target body beforehand is 40,300mm3 and the tool body is 19,880mm3, so the result should be 20,420mm3?

This happened to anyone else? Is it a bug that Autodesk are aware of, or is there a work around (aside from my calculation above)? I've obviously got what I need now, but was curious.

Hi @tallmatt,

That does seem weird. I'd love to take a peek at the model just in case there is a bug here. Do you mind sharing your design file with me so I can take a deeper peek.

Thanks,

Hi James,

Yes, that's fine - just let me know the best way to share it with you.

Cheers

Matt

Hi @tallmatt,

Thanks for sharing. I believe this is a bug. I have logged this with the development team as FUS-33857 for reference.

Luckily we found a workaround (albeit not the most direct, but it works). If you export a STEP file from the model and reupload it, the mass properties display just fine for the geometry.

Attached is my step file.

Ah, ok, thanks - I'll use this workaround next time it happens (if the bug isn't fixed by then). Cheers!

Did this bug ever get fixed? Cause the work around is getting really annoying.

File >Export and then Attach a *.f3d file here that exhibits this behavior.

Here's one. Notice all the bodies have a volume before they are combined.

Hi, I am also experiencing this problem after splitting an intact body with a stitched surface, only one half doesn't appear to have any volume or mass after splitting.

However this is not only an issue if i want to know my part weight, but it is also preventing me from doing a boolean cut or any other type of intersect operation with that body. Inspect - intersect tells me that two very clearly overlapping solids (one of them the defective one) do not intersect.

I would not use Loft to create primitive geometry (cylinder).
