After updating drawing's references views content disappear

I have a design and drawings I made several days before. Later I changed the design and tried to update drawings but unfortunately all views content disappear and shows up as red boxes. The reference also disappear from object tree.

Please help to update drawings.

I have found a workaround. In the object tree, right click on root node, select Design History. Versions of reference design show up in floating window. Select the top element labeled "Now". At the bottom of the window press "Use" (don't be confused by "Use" button appearing when you press "..." - it is not active at "Now"-element). Reference is updated to the latest version: Screenshot

Questions still remain:

1. What does main reference update button (link icon) do and why it does not updated reference properly?

2. What is the difference between reference update with this button and method I mentioned above?
