We're trying to get a lathe set up for counterclockwise spindle rotation with the tools facing down. I can't get it to work properly with my custom tools. If I use the sample tools (set up for clockwise) the animation looks like it's set for CCW. If I set up my tools for CCW they error unless I set them to left handed. What am I doing wrong here?
Hi @Aaron34NGQ
Thanks for posting! Would you mind sharing the file in which you are experiencing this issue with me? If you'd prefer to not share the design publicly on the forum feel free to send a public link in a private message.
Also, if you could create a short screencast illustrating the problem we would greatly appreciate it!
Please let me know if you have any questions!
I didn't have a mic here. This is a sample part with tools i created. I'm trying to set my tools up to run CCW. I can't get a right handed tool to operate properly. I can get a left handed tool to compute a path but it appears to be running CW.

Hi @Aaron34NGQ
Thanks for the screencast. Even though the part is a sample, could you save it and share it with me using the instructions in my previous post? The tools you created will be saved in the document file, so I will be able to have a closer look at any changes made to the tools when recreating your process.
Hey There!
Just so we are all on the same page here, when you say clockwise, is that looking from the headstock/jaws towards the tailstock? i.e. as viewed from behind the spindle?
Also, I am not sure why you are changing the orientation in the turret 180 degrees, this checkbox should be the option you need to change.
Right hand tools are meant for cutting clockwise, and left hand tools are meant for cutting counter clockwise, so when I use a left hand tool, the correct toolpath is generated:
A right handed tool mounted upside down will face the opposite way, while a left handed tool will face the correct way.
Maybe you could include a labeled picture of your setup and what you are trying to accomplish? It sounds to me like you have a right handed tool that you are trying to run upside down and backwards. I'm having trouble visualizing your setup.

No problem! Glad you got everything figured out 🙂
Let us know if you run into any other issues in the future!

I seem to having a similar issue. I set my tooling to LEFT hand with a clockwise cut, based on the what the lathe cuts. The tool is flipped the wrong way as well as the tool path. Any ideas what I can change?
Hi @tony
I believe that unchecking the "Clockwise" flag (as shown in @xander.lucianos previous post) should allow you to generate this toolpath corrrectly. You can't really cut with a clockwise spindle direction with a left-handed tool - the wrong side of the insert would be engaged by the material. This can be visualized easily by considering the photograph you posted and the diagram below:
Hopefully this helps! Please let me know if you have any questions.
Is this the same configuration you mentioned in your diagram? I think your diagram is looking at the machine in a different view. M03 on my machine is clockwise as in the diagram below and all the g-code I have ever run for the left hand tooling like I showed in my picture. When I try to set a left hand tool running M03 clockwise in fusion the tool looks backwards, is there a flip tool command?
Yes, but that image is a little deceptive. The arrows are on the near side. So when the lathe is going M03 Clockwise, if you were to look at the Headstock from the Tailstock, the chuck would be rotating CCW.
You need to run your left hand tool with your spindle going M04 CCW and to do that you uncheck the checkbox I have highlighted in my first reply.
Edit: This might help, but think of a drill. When it's spinning CW and you look head on with a drill, the drill chuck is rotating CCW. But if you look from the the motor's perspective, it will be rotating CCW. Same with a lathe. You have to think of it from the perspective of which way the motor needs to spin. Not so much which way the it looks like it's spinning.

Ok this is about as clear as I can get the picture from my phone. An M03 command on this machine is turning the material like so into a left hand cutter to machine. If I run an M04 the tool would crash.
M03 on every machine I have ever seen spins the chuck the other way from what you have pictured. There's something bizarre about that set up of yours
I'm not really sure what to tell you, I guess that why everything seems all mixed up then. So is there a way to flip the tool holder to that configuration then?
Is it a Mori Seiki by chance? Old Mori's have the X axis flipped which changes a lot of your code
It's a Monarch Predator. Fanuc 21t controller.
X + goes up and Z minus is towards the spindle.
You can dig around in your settings and see if there's an option to flip the motor. It could also be that the polarity was flipped when the motor was wired in. You could change the post processor in CAD to swap M03 and M04. Or you could just manually change the code.
I don't think its a polarity issue as the machine is 20 + years old and has always run this way and it is spinning in the correct direction. I think the issue is the the machine is setup to run with Left hand tools and the turret clamping blocks are for this configuration. Is there a way to change this fusion i.e flip the tools to face the operator? I think it assumes that all tools are mounted into the lathe facing away from the operator? I have another right hand tool in the turret and it's flipped to run the other way with a right hand and a different tool clamping block.
The only way I know to do it in inventor is to edit the tool and under setup change spindle rotation to counter clockwise. However that's going to output M04 so you'll either need to edit your post processor or manually change your code after you post it.
