Plunge milling option?

Just playing around with different roughing strategies today.

Is there an option for plunge milling?

 

Or is that in the roadmap somewhere?

In what way do you wont plunge, plunge straight into the material or into a hole

Hello.... Back some years ago i tried this "Plunge Roughing" using a program called "WorkNC" ... it had the ability to take your 3D CAD model and produce straight down Z axis motion starting from the outer edge of the block or optionally some "Pre-Drilled" holes at specific location in your work piece..... Conceptually it would step in a pattern into your work piece at value you determined was OK for your tooling choice and the plunge straight down into the block and removing a chunk of material until it came in contact with the underlying 3D shape in the model..... I would then lift up to the top of the stock block and index over the amount you set in your parameters and make the next plunge ....and so on ... and so on .... until you had your 3D shape in a very choppy shape sitting in from of you and a PILE of steel chips sitting on the table and all over the floor. We were using a 6" diameter plunging style cutter with about 12 large carbide inserts loaded into it on a 85HP 12" spindle machine.... The material removal rate was HUGE ... and we couldn't keep the chip bins emptied fast enough.... I actually was a very efficient method to remove large quantities of material in a relatively short period of time compared to the typical Z planer style toolpath strategies of the day..... However some of the cutters used today can really move across the work pieces now so you make small cuts with high feed-rates to get the job done..... Big jobs could really benefit from the plunge roughing style of programming .... Small jobs stick with the high feed carbide inserted tooling and have a machine with smooth contouring capabilities and you will win ... Good luck with your work.... Regards, Brian

I think one reason we should think about this is many older high HP and torque machine with low memory are becoming available. If this forum gains some traction I'll submit it to and Idea Station. request
