Inserting clamping devices takes too long

Hello,

I am having difficulties inserting clamping devices into my Fusion 360 project.

For example, I want to mill a turned part in a three-jaw chuck. I have created the chuck as a 3D model in Fusion and set up multiple joints so that all 3 jaws can move simultaneously.

The process goes like this: First, I add the three-jaw chuck, then the clamping jaws, spacer blocks, etc. Then I assemble everything and create connections.

The problem is that it is very cumbersome each time to position and connect the chuck with the appropriate clamping jaws and workpiece correctly.

Is there a simpler way to do this? How do you deal with this?

Look up how to setup a parametric vise, it's not exactly the same, but will show how to setup a joint origin to locate it on the stock and give some ideas on set the jaws based on stock size with parameters.

I model the chuck in its own file, with joints and any bases. I then insert it into my part, break the link, and join it on center as needed. You can then move the jaws to match your OD, or edit the Expression for OD size.

I watched the video. It's much easier with a vice. But I will adopt a few ideas. I think I could create all of my soft jaws as configurations. I don't like the joints feature in Fusion, it's much more logical in Solid Edge.

Join the center of the chuck face to the center back of your part, then just a Z offset to position it "on" the jaw step of your choice. If solid edge is like solidworks, you're supposed to constain every axis one at a time. In fusion, you constrain everything in one joint and THEN allow it movement, if required (a bolt used to need 2 joints in SW to be fixed, in F360 it only takes one)

In the latest update there is now an "Insert component" feature which allows you to more easily select a work holding template and insert it into your file, rather than navigating to the location in the data panel.

This speeds up the workflow quite a bit

Oh nice, i will try it.

I would like to try to create all my clamping jaws as a configuration so that I can change more quickly.

I don't know why, but I don't have these functions like you showed in the video and screenshot.

Hi, What version of Fusion are you on?

It seems like you may not have the latest version, you should be on 2.0.19215

Interesting, You shouldn't have needed to install insider to get access to these features, they are in the production release.

Here is the attached vice config

My Fusion 360 wouldn't update. Maybe the new version wasn't released for Germany yet.
Thank you for your help.
