Engrave certain parts of a pocket

I have this table that needs a lightning design cut into it. I was thinking of pocketing the larger sections and engrave the points with a vbit where it gets too small for a pocket.

My question is, can I just engrave the parts that a certain size so I am not engraving the large open sections?

Or, is there a better way to machine this all together?

The piece is 91"x42"
