I have some problems clearing irregular 3d shapes, 10cm high. pocket clearing takes away either to little or to much. to little so my finishing tool still hits the sides of the cleared pocket when it is in deeper than the flute length. or to much where it wants to mill either very small very deep holes where it is not neccesary or it goes all around the shape and cuts my shape loose to early.
i am cutting statues. in this case a large man from foam. to be able to cut it i split him up in smaller pieces that fit on our machine, in the example file is a piece off his hand. I first cut the piece from one side. then i flip over the whole plate which normally has multiple pieces in it. i use double side tape to secure the pieces to the machining table so the pieces do not fly around when they get loose from the plate. Then I cut the pieces from the other side. I want the pieces to stay connected to the big plate as long as possible because the doublesided tape cannot take to much stress.
I would like to clear only what is nessary to finish the surface that cannot be reached from the other side. for finishing the first side i use a contour finish for al the slopes up to 89,9 degrees. after flipping around i finish the rest.
does anyone know a good roughing strategy?
ps. my flatend tools are only long enough for 70mm depth. the round head is long enough for the whole depth
