Using a body as stock

We have a 6mm plate that we use as a positioning tool. Now we have to modify it, by milling some edges of.

 

The red body in the screenshot below is the existing part. The Blue body is the correct part. How do I go about this in Fusion 360?

In your Setup you'll want to go to the Stock tab and use the pull-down. Go to "From Solid Body" and select it, which I believe can be done from the CAD tree or directly selecting the model.

I understand how to select the other body as a stock, but when I set up a 2D pocket toolpath it will create a toolpath for the entire contour, as shown below. I want it to just mill the remaing material.

I believe that 2D operations won't look at the stock model. You can either create a sketch and use it as your Stock Contours in the Geometry tab, or you could try a 3D Pocket Clearing and constrain it to the new pocket, and check Rest Machining From Setup Stock. Several ways to get around this, and there may be more that I'm not thinking of right now.

 

If you can export the part as a .F3D file and share it here I'd be glad to take a stab at it.

Yes, that's what I used in this example. Personally I would use Adaptive Clearing though, and follow up with a 2D Contour to finish. You'll have to try some things out to find what works best for your parts and machine(s), but I'm glad this was helpful.

The file is attached to the post too, so take a look at the geometry selections in the setup and toolpath. I didn't bother changing anything about passes or linking so they're stock.

You can do it with 2d. You need to select the stock like this. File attached
