Unable to open tool holder tab

This happened the other day and after closing and reopening Fusion it fixed itself....

Today i've restarted both Fusion and the computer, and tried the repair function in the service utility for Fusion but i'm still not able to open the tool holder tab to add or edit any holders on tools. Anytime I click on that tab I'm met with a system error?

Software seems to be working fine otherwise but unfortunately I really need to change some holders.

Any help is appreicated.

@Garrett_Wade Thanks for reporting this issue. I have created a task and will ask the developers to assess it.

They may come back to you with requests for more information if that's ok.

In the short term you could utilised the old tool library (under preferences) to modify the holders.

Thanks

@Garrett_Wade We did some work recently on allowing the user to expand libraries in the holder tab. This seems to have caused a bug when a user has deleted libraries containing holders. We are looking to fix this.

In the meantime deleting user preferences enables you to access the holder tab again. The instructions below will clear all preferences but you could re implement the file again after we fix the issue if you do not want to lose them permanently.

Hi Christopher, thanks for the reply and info on this issue!

Just to be clear and make sure I am on the same page before I do this.../we are talking about clearing all of these preferences located in the the screen shot below? Or are we talking about all user defined things (like expressions or defaults changed on toolpath parameters and such also)?

@Garrett_Wade You will find the file in your C drive through the following pathway.

Browse to ~/Library/Application Support/Autodesk/Neutron Platform/Options

@christopher.cooperVHK2N , Yea I understand the how part of your instructions and where I need to go to do that. My question at this point is just ensuring what else that will effect and focusing on your: "The instructions below will clear all preferences" statement.

Just trying to confirm which preferences will be cleared as a result while fixing this.

Thanks

HI @Garrett_Wade,

The options shown in your screenshot are saved to a different file which is synced to the cloud - these are known as 'global' options in that they take effect no matter which computer you use Fusion 360 on. These options won't be lost when you follow the instructions above.

The options saved in "NMachineSpecificOptions.xml" are specific to the computer you are working on, as different machines have different capabilities. An example of something that is stored in this file is any user default values/expressions for particular machining parameters (e.g. if you've clicked on Spindle Speed in the operation dialog and selected "Save as User Default").

If you are concerned that you might lose one of these preferences, the safest thing to do would be to rename your "NMachineSpecificOptions.xml" file (to e.g. "NMachineSpecificOptions_backup.xml"), and then re-open Fusion which will then create a new one. You should then be able to access the holder tab.

If at that point you find you're missing some of your preferences, if you ZIP up the backed-up XML file and send it to me via a DM I can modify it for you.

I hope this helps

Is there an ETA for a fix for this?

Your workaround is working for me but I am having to do it very frequently.

I have an add-in I wrote that cleans out most of the 'default' tool libraries and inserts our shop's standard tool libraries. This is no doubt causing the issue. Is there anything I can do to prevent this bug on my end? I assume the preferences are looking for a certain guid that cannot be found, causing the crash?

@jsormaz The bug has been fixed by the developers and is lined up to go into the next major release which is July.

@jswickJ9PWC This will only cause issues for some users and should be resolved in the interim by following the work around as outlined in the thread.

Are you experiencing the crash?

Have you tried the work around above?

Can you provide workaround instructions for Windows?

@jswickJ9PWC This workflow should stop the crashing. I believe the solution is the same for both Windows and Mac. @nathaniel.avery86R8N is this correct?

@jswickJ9PWC  You can also go to the tool holder you want to use on a tool and right click and "copy tool" then go to the tool you want to use that holder on right click>paste tool and it will apply the holder without going into the holder tab of that tool.

That works fine most of the time; just so happens that today I am creating new holders for a new machine and trying to set it up so that's not an option right now.

The workaround above is working so far, but I'm going to be very happy when the actual fix rolls out.
