Stock to leave functionality

We have an exercise to accomplish in wich a part model is given and we need to suggest the necessary operations in order to machine the part, leaving 0,3mm for a later fininshing process. After checking with teacther the validation of our CAM operations, we should continue with the rest of the CAM operations wich is, removing the 0,3mm left by the "stock to leave" option ticked. Now here is the problem...at least from my expertise...

The way we are proceding with the CAM is...to open a new operation and put it immidiatelly after the one that machined that area, this time by unticking the "stock to leave" option and refering to REST MACHINING > From previous operations...and that ok...if you have only 2 or 3 operations more to add. But since we need do "duplicate" all previous OPs and unticking "stock to leave" its a miscelaneous problem, very confused.

Adding to that...from one setup to the other the new operation  added ignores or misses the "REST MACHINING > From previous operations" order.

its very frustrating and stressing because time is running out and we are doing several attempts-error per operation.

What it would be best or more intuitive is:

1-Have the part model

2- CAM the part

3- If "stock to leave" was previously selected, should have an option to SAVE STOCK" > from previous operations > name.

4-open a new file > import model/manufacture > select the "stock name" > import it > work on it

We did try to simulate till the end > right click > save stock > name > go to model > insert mesh > select stock saved > convert Mesh to Brep >...and BOOM...pc crashed, fusion crashed, we crashed 😉 > "to many facets" alert...etc..."dont recommed conversion" alert...etc...!

Because we now that a mesh is cased on triangles and converting them to a single geometric entity is a huge mathmatical challenge...this is why we suggest the stesp written above. To just ignore the mesh process and let Fusion "record" the material left "stock left" in the end of the CAM so that can be used in a another file later on... or by another person...who know´s?

You don't need to convert the mesh, you can just select it in the setup as a body. Also there is an option to set defaults for machining ops. When you have an op setup with all your defaults, right click the op in the browser and select Make Default. For individual inputs in an op, while editing right click in a field and select Make default. You can't do this for dropdowns though, for dropdowns the only option is to use Make All Default.

Really don't know what to  add for settings defaults, just try it and see. There's always a reset to built in default if something doesn't work out.

 

For the mesh as stock. Run the simulation to the end, export stock as an STL. In the other design, use insert mesh to import the mesh. Then when you create a setup, on the Stock tab for Mode select From Body and select the mesh.

Hi Mark,
I did try the "mesh as stock" bit...but no joy!
When I run the simulation till the end > right click > select save stock >
stl. > open a new design:
- 1st attempt > File > new drawing > from design > select the .stl file >
imported ok > but when selecting the coordinates, it´s not possible to
select the axis... the part imported is a block which it is not detected
boundaries or geometric entities, as lines.
-2nd attempt > fille > open > select the .stl file > same issue.

it seems that the mesh needs to be converted as a body in order for the
geometric entities to be recognized and detectable for sock, coordinates
and Ops genaration.

Now after exhausting attempt/error method, i managed (with a little bite of
luck on the way) to get a method that seems to work all the time when you
need to work this way!
For a better understanding of our work way...that is not so E.T. thing, is
the following. We dont manufacture thousands of parts from an original
project. We CAM the part, by leaving a 0,5mm of stock (radially and
axially)...then when possible we go to the CNC machine, and after
machining...we check everything...and if ok... we continue with it by
removing the rest of stock left before by previous ops...! I believe that
in many shops this might happen frequently.
The method of all the "leave stock ticked OPs" mixed with the "leave stock
unticked OPs" in the same file is a huge mess.

the method we are using now and at the moment it is working for everyone
and for all situations is the following:
1-Run the simulation till the end.
2- save stock as stl file (in your desktop for ex.)
3- Open a new design with the original part you wish to machine/CAM.
4-set up stock normally as usual (set coordinates, the original stock
dimensions, etc...)
5- select the OP that best suits for an specific area, region or entity
6- select the tool and its parameters
7- in geometry > tick rest machining > in source select "from file"...and
will ask you to type the location of the file...now here is the work around
of the work around ( you need to now the exact location of the file since
in this field you will not have the "select destination" thing) maybe
autodesk considers it (i don't know). Tip - check properties of the stl
file...copy the location showing there...and past it in the file field.
8- check the other parameters of the OP you wish and press ok

despite the fact that you entered different info for the stock definitions
in the setup, comparing with the rest machining info in the OP of that
setup.. it will work!!
now your op will only consider the restock for the paths calculated instead
of the all stock (and will air walk)

Just a couple of thoughts on using Insert Mesh from the insert menu. I guess the mesh imports in the correct place but you can't select datum points?

 

1. Create an empty component and make sure it's active.

2. Use Insert Mesh to import the mesh.

3. Create a sketch and or offset planes to give you a point to select as your datum in the CAM workspace. You could even

     draw a dummy box similar to the stock you created in your example. Similar to this.

The only small advantage this might give is it's easy to insert the mesh, you don't need to find the full path needed to insert into an op. Also as the mesh has been created in a component you could reposition using a joint if needed.

 

Also using your idea above you could use insert mesh then in the op select from body and select the inserted mesh. At least this way the mesh is part of the design file.
