Router Machining Strategy - Complex Cut

Good Evening

 

I am needing a strategy to cut an end of a piece smaller in the x, y and z dimension. I will attach a screen grab of the end, and if you could advise on what other files you require to solve this cut. Please Advise

Hi @krummeck,

 

Can you share your model so one of us can take a look at it?

 

From the picture I should say depending on the size:

  1. 3D Adaptive Roughing everything
  2. 2D Contour outside finishing
  3. face top
  4. Pocket or contour with multiple passes for Facing lower level.
  5. chamfering

I would love to share the model... what do I need to do, is it a export as, or a saved copy, what do you need?

File > Export > Save to local folder. Return to thread and attach the .f3d file in your reply.

Warren,

What exactly are you trying to machine on this part? Your original post says "Make smaller in the x,y,z dimensions"

How so? How much? Is this a permanent change to the part or just a single change?

Hi There

The long thin plank has ends that are thinner and narrower than the rest. It is these ends that I need a strategy for, not knowing if it should be a 3d cut, various 2d cuts. The rest of the part I will cut with a 2d contour.

 

I hope this makes sense. I did post a pic of the end/s needing cutting. It is 18mm plywood (17.7mm accurately) so no surfacing or any of that needed, just cut the shape out and follow a strategy to cut those ends.

Yes, I saw the picture, but I was puzzled by your "smaller in x,y,z" comment. That implied that you wanted to make it smaller then it already was

Wow Seth, that is phenomenal 

 

wrt The dogbones, the end slips into the slot on the top of those 'sides', so what I have done is to make that cut run under where the sides will be. Wedges will be taped into the groove cut and the rounded edges I have left can be replicated onto the wedges, so they will stay. I will need to chisel out the 2 rounded corners on the shoulders that the sides push up against, this I will do.

 

The magical ALT key, when I touched that bottom edge to get that piece to cut, the whole profile was selected. Right there the strategy fell into the water and drowned. 

 

Thank you once again for the advice, video and all the solutions, I really do appreciate this. I will now go through that video piece at a time and replicate you movements for each step.
