Restraining machining area to the outside of the boundary

I have been doing it like it is shown below in an example for a while but it just doesn's seem very efficient that I have to create an additional sketch every time I want to restrain the machining area in a similar way.

@vid.kok 

Instead of drawing some sketches you can do patches and later you can assign the patch surface in CAM operation so it wont create a toolpath inside that area that would be efficient.

The other way is toolpath edit that my favorite you can select the area you don't want click enter it will removed

But i think it is part of extension and out for testing for long you can enable this preview in preference menu

I am aware of the first way however it doesn't seem to be any faster than my way.

 

The second way seems very clever but unfortunately my license doesn't support that feature. Do you know if the feature will be available for users with education license and when?

Hi,

I chose two edges for the Machining Boundary, and set the Tool Containment to Tool outside boundary. Initially this gave almost the right result, but some toolpath would bleed into the pocket. I applied a small negative offset to the tool containment, and this gave me a toolpath like yours. Hope this helps?

Same option instead of selecting two profile i have select it as one selection

You'll just need to manually re-chain the boundary. You can do this by selecting one roughly correct, click on it and then select the edges you want it to follow. Then just accept the change with the green tick. I've attached a video showing how.

That is an interesting trick and it seemed to have worked until I reduced the stepover down to 0.1 mm. Now the toolpath is not contained anymore.

 

It seems like the tool is simply not respoecting the boundary for some reason.

I would call not patching the holes as a massive waste of time it takes seconds to do them then seconds to add them in the toolpath then it is selecting the bottom edge for the toolpath and done, other than setting the stepover.

 

Then you have the holes patch for when you finish the top surfaces. The amount of time put in trying some other way that is not working for you why bother your time = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Hi @vid.kok ,

 

It's not that the boundary is not being respected, it's because you have Tool On Boundary with the offset. With a small stepover like this it just allows a few passes to be able to be created within these boundary settings, whereas with the large stepover the passes wouldn't have fallen within this area.

I had a play around with the settings and to be honest creating some patches to use does seem like the best option here. It is fairly quick and simple to do, a lot quicker than trying to fiddle with the settings to get it just right.

I've attached another video showing the steps to create and use the patches.

I always make sketches so far...  but thanks to your trick guys, I will try patches, I think that will come in handy most of the time!  And it becomes re-usable for many different operations potentially, on top of making selection and operation settings simpler.  Thanks for the trick!
