Rapids setting and adaptive clearing

I'm looking into buying a new machine that can achieve much higher (about 4x) speeds in the rapids, traversing the piece. Changing the rapids speed in the setup only achieved a gain of a few seconds, though.

So, does this mean the non-contact portion of adaptive toolpaths, for example, don't count as 'rapids', and these portions of the toolpath are performed at the feed rate?

By 'non-contact portion' I mean the parts of the toolpath where the bit is moving between individual cuts in a toolpath, and not actually making contact with the piece. Like the left-to-right movement in the attached screencast.

If they aren't considered 'rapids', is there an option to set this non-contact portion so the bit moves at maximum speed? On some of my projects these movements seem to make up about 30-40% of the total toolpath movements.

That is not considered a rapid move. If you look in the linking tab (I believe) you will see it called "non-engagement feed rate" were you can set it to a number different than your cutting feedrate.

Wow, that's exactly it. Thank you.

Well, increasing that by a massive amount only decreased the carve time by about 10%. Maybe higher non-engagement speed isn't as important as I'd imagined...
