Probe Geometry - How to probe "non-orthogonal" features

Fusion team,

 

Is there a way to select geometry not orthogonal to the X and Y axis workoffset for Probe Geometry function? For example, the software recognizes a rectangular face that is on XY plane normal to X and Y axis to inspect a rectangular boss. But if the rectangle is clocked at an angle and the same surface is selected, only a Z inspection is available. 

 

Is there a way to inspect the angled rectangular boss or other geometry not normal to X and Y axes? I tried selecting the opposite walls too but no inspection surface is recognized.

Try the "Inspect Surface" feature out. It should let you probe just about anything, from angled surfaces to complex shapes. The only caveat (which is a plus in my opinion) is that it doesn't generate the human-readable inspection report that Geometry probing does, but rather you import it back into Fusion and it shows you a graphical representation of the deviation as well as a table showing data for each point.

@nick_p3dcreations thanks for the reply.

 

Yes I have tried that and Inspect Surface works pretty good. However, it only reads points. I have a part that need to be inspected to dimensions on the print. Inspect surface generates the data an sure I can do math on it to extrapolate the answer, but it doesn't seem to have a good way to measure features. For example, if I probe a rectangular boss, I would want to know the size of that boss instead of getting points I have to analyze. This way I can check off the dimensions I need to inspect based on the print. Also Inspection Surface really depends on where you click the point. If the geometric feature is angled, it will be difficult to measure size with this function. 

 

Probe geometry seems to work great with orthogonal geometry, but if it becomes angled it shuts down. Any way around this?

Hi @ciscoRZGL2,

 

Currently there isn't a good solution for this, Probe WCS and Probe Geometry both utilise canned cycles on your machine. I don't know of a canned cycle that would allow this type of measurement. Even the normal rectangular measurement one is debatable due to how few points it takes on the part.
We really appreciate the feedback and being able to do more complex measurements like this is defiantly where we want to be heading. 

I know its not exactly a solution but did you know you can copy and paste from the inspect results table?
You can then paste these results into excel for further calculations.

I was afraid of that. Using the Renishaw probing cycles, anything can be probed, even simple geometry that is not orthogonal to the work offset. It's just a pin to be writing the probing cycles by hand. The Inspection Plus software from Renishaw allows for this, so hopefully fusion 360 can work it's way toward that. 

 

Readying angles when touching two points, interpreting geometric shapes in odd locations, etc would be awesome.

Hi @ciscoRZGL2,

 

Are you thinking of using O9822 to accomplish this?

 

We are constantly adding new probing macros so I will defiantly get this put on the list.
