Need help with grooving

Having some problems doing the grooving on this part. Attached is a screenshot.

Angle is 60 degrees so I planned on using a single point OD threading insert.

OD is .249. Groove DIA is .217" angle is 60 degree why I chose a single point thread tool.Cant get a toolpath at all. Trying to just plunge on positions. It is NOT a thread. Groove ID is .217" and Turned OD is .249"

Unfortunately you cannot use a threading insert with a grooving operation. I believe what you want to do is basically use a custom form tool to do grooving and we are already looking into implementing this feature. However at this point I cannot give you a timeline on when it will be done.

Ok thank you. I'll give this a try. thought I did try and make a custom tool as well and used the OD turning and Grooving op and had no success.

I'm still not getting anything. Wont even give me a toolpath with everything I've tried. Custom tool. threading tool on a profile, threading tool grooving. custom tool grooving, custom tool profile. nothing.

I'm sorry if I was not sufficiently clear but we haven't implemented custom form tools for turning yet. Like I said, we are still looking into doing it but have no timeline for when it will be done for now.

Could I make a groove tool that had a flat bottom and the right width as the threading tool and trick it into just plunging into the part at the center of the groove and the center of the "grooving" tool?

Yes, you could probably use this hack. Create a single groove operation with a grooving tool and make sure you set the compensation of the tool in the setup tab of the tool library to insert center. Also, set the single groove : groove side alignment parameter to middle. Let me know if you have issues.
