Maximum Ramp Stepdown ?

Hello guys,

This is sort of a basic question but I having trouble visualizing this entire thing.

Lets say that I have a keep pocket that I ma cutting with a tool 0.25" Dia.

On my tool setting I have a Max Step down of 0.050" (a CNC router not a mill) and I am doing down 0.375".

Now I want to ramp, but there is the Max ramp stepdown. How does it related to my normal tool path DOC. does one override the other? How does the ramp step down affect the calculated chip load?

The Ramp stepdown is handled on it's own during Ramp moves. You can have a light ramp and aggressive cutting stepdown and vice versa

Depending on material (stainless and carbon steel) I typically shoot for about 3-5 degrees, depending on size of ramp diameter. Soft materials like wood or plastic can tolerate a lot more angle. Tooling manufacturers will often define max ramp ability.

What controls the length of the ramp? is it the angle?

I guess it make sense to have both a step down for the cut and a ramp to move downwards along a face rather then just using a ramp along with "infinate" DOC ?
