issues with projecting a sketch

Hi Group

i am tuning the bore of a component and i can't see clearly if the tool is running correctly  on the 3d model so i decided to project a sketch so i can see the tool tip running on the sketch.

see the enclosed image regarding the projection.

the sketch plane is sliced through the center of the part, it is a tube with a radiused sloping internal edge then a through bore.

the blue biits are the selected 3d faces to project, the purple lines are the projections on the 2d plane but i am not getting the full 2d profile on the plane from the 3d shape?  i roughly drew the expected results in red further down in the picture.

why do these surfaces not project as a 2d sketch on the plane?

 

 the internal and external diameters project ok but these are straight so i am assuming faces with curves do not project??

 

please advise

please see a picture enclosed using another 3d program with the projected edge  as i expected to get in fusion.

Can you share your Fusion file so we have a better understanding of what you are experiencing?

File > Export > Save to local folder. Return to thread and attach the .f3d file in your reply

Is this what you are looking to accomplish? As far as I'm aware, this is the only workflow that gets you what you are looking for

yes that helps and in fact i don't need the sketch if i split the model and hide half, i can see what i wanted.

see the enclosed image.  you can see the tool path in blue goes inside the model but the tool follows the model. so it looks liek it is working ok.

i can now see this is to do with the tip radius as if i set the tip radius to zero the tool profile then follows the model as well.

I think i would like to see the tool lines following the model though as for a quick check you can see it looks like it is working OK.  

i guess where i have not used this on my lathe yet i am being extra cautious as i don't want a crash when i do later today / tomorrow.

Can you attach your file with the setup and toolpath please. What you see will depend on how the tool is setup and how you have the compensation type set, bee easier to advise if we have your design. Also can you use the Photos option to embed pictures rather that attach them.

If you expand the op, right click the toolpath folder and select View Toolpath you can scroll through the toolpath and see the point of contact, also running the simulation will show if the tool actually goes into the part.

This is what you'll see scrolling through the toolpath.

thankyou for your reply, the tool path moves window is great but the xz coordinates are not the correct data in this window Is that correct?
see image below, the X should be on 35mm

Looks like it's the centre point of the tip. When it's cutting the front face it shows 3.175 and just sketching up a tip that's the centre line, working out the diameter is a bit more difficult as there's the tip rad to take into account. I expect the toolpath viewer was written for milling and not had any work done for the lathe.

 

The gcode is easy enough to read for diameters when you post and I doubt you'll look at the toolpath viewer in Fusion after a few jobs. The simulations pretty good in Fusion and just checking a couple of diameters in the posted code should tell you if you've set something up wrong, the code will cut what you've modeled.

@safiredesignengineers  Just a heads up, be careful with the stepover for the finish cut, it doesn't have a separate setting for X an Z and the default of 1.0mm is not going to end well when plunging into the end face with a boring bar. You might want to use 2 ops, one for roughing leaving less on the faces and more on the diameters then finish with a second op.

thanks Mark, I have now got the program running on the lathe but am trying to figure out tool compensation, the proto-trak controllers are not very clever..... hopefully I will figure it out soon 8-)

Accepted solution

If you set the tool up as Tip Tangent and set the compensation to In Computer in th op you should not need tool comp on the lathe. Just make sure there's no G41/42 adding comp, should be just G40.

 

I've just bought a lathe with a SLX control, not had it commissioned yet. Hopefully I'll get a post figured out, made posts for 3 other lathes so as long as the Prototrak doesn't do anything totally unique it shouldn't be a problem.
