importing models from Solidworks into the manufacturing space

hey everyone,

I recently modelled a part in Solidworks based off of a part I watched an aerospace company make, and brought it into the manufacture space of Fusion 360. Although I was able to set my part offsets correctly, I'm noticing that when I open up the part it's rotated 90 degrees and when I simulate the toolpaths it's as if I have it on a horizontal mill-which isn't what I wanted. How do you set a new orientation for imported models?

Hi - You should just be able to change the WCS on the setup so that the Z points up in the desired direction.

Hi @Anonymous,

Looking at you file it would have machined correctly its just that your model Z wasn't what you were expecting.

The easiest thing to do would be to jump back into the design workspace, and use the move command to rotate the model 90 degrees.

You will have to just re select the faces for your setup orientation, but then just re-generating all your tools will do the trick.

As @Richard.stubley  suggests use the Design Mode to re-orientate the part using the Move/Copy function.

Modified file attached for your study 🙂

Hey Richard,

Thanks for getting back to me so fast. I assumed it was a rather simple fix. I'm a newb so this is really valuable info 🙂

No problem.

We had to do our first toolpath once!

hey Richard,

Quick question. I tried to go back into my original model to use the move tool myself and I did but then how do you regenerate the toolpaths? I went back to the manufacture space and right clicked on all of my paths and clicked "generate" but the toolpaths are now rotated 90. I must have clicked something weird...?

When you have re-orientated the model in Design then you need to Edit your Setup in Manufacture and reselect the correct faces etc forthe new orientation, your original settings need changing, have a look at the Modified file I uploaded for you and go to the Setup and look carefully at what and how the settings have been done and that should point you in the right direction 🙂

Without seeing your new re-oriented file I can`t tell you exactly what to select !!

Hi @Anonymous,

@engineguy is exactly right, you need to go back into your setup and re select your faces. It should then be ok.

I didn't want to get too deep into the modelling side and overwhelm you. But when you edit a bought in part, like what you have here, we have no modelling history. So we start in something called direct editing, in short this means we dont keep a history of anything you do and there is reduced associativity. What I always do in this case is turn on "capture design history" This will then turn on the timeline on the bottom of your screen, then if we can automate the re selection we will.

Make sure you are in the design workspace > Right click on the top component in your browser > Capture design history
