How to reduce machining time ?

Hi all,

I am trying to reduce machining time on a guitar neck. I find that the tool makes a lot of up and down motions (rétractations) that are very time consuming and seem useless to me.

Can I avoid this ? What am I doing wrong ?

For starters, I'd point out that you had your Plunge feedrate set rather low (300mm/min) whereas you were cutting at 2200mm/min. Setting your plunge feed to 2200 did knock off a little time.

 

In the end, I just decided to ditch the 3D Pocket routine, as, well, this isn't a Pocket operation. I opted instead to go with a 3D Adaptive. Your Pocket was clocking in at 23 minutes. This adaptive is at 10. There is still room for improvement, as there is a considerable amount of "back and forth":

I tried breaking it into regions by using sketches to define my Stock Contours, but it over rode that selection if I also used Rest Machining. The end result with that was it considered the stock as a square block and was cutting a large amount of air. I also tried "Limit by Area" and that seems to have ZERO effect, I've still got a dozen back and forth movements.

 

At any rate, here is my toolpath, setup is Liberty.

Thank you for this help. But there is something i forgot to mention: the tool must not go behind the "heel" because my gig is holding the neck from here.

That surface should be avoided, but it doesn't seem to be possible with the adaptative.

I created a rough block (as a separate body), defined that as "Fixture" in Setup (this will only provide for collision detection)

In the Adaptive, I selected that new body as "Model" and also selected "Include Setup Model"

Here is the real thing, you are very close. The neck has, in fact, a "tenon" that is made before with a router.

I will check your file, you idea seems good.

I do not really understand when to select Model, or Include setup model.

Model is used when you need to either override the Setup model, or in this case, add additional models or surfaces to get the desired result. As @LibertyMachine has demonstrated, in this case you want to add a fixture piece for the machine to avoid, but until it knows something is there it won't do so. There are a few ways to do this but adding a solid body or sketch (you should be able to add sketches for boundaries and call it part of the Model also) is by far the most consistent and foolproof.
